The project reached the 2nd place in the "Designing Resilient Schools" competition by Open Online Academy (April 2014).

The competition requested to design a school in Guiuan (Eastern Samar Province, Philippines), with a focus on resilience to natural disasters, in particular after typhoon Hainan devastated part of the Philippines in November 2013. The design had to take into account other frequent natural disasters occuring in the Philippines such as floodings and earthquakes.

SITE DESIGN, SPATIALITY, STUDENT DEVELOPMENT
The site is designed as an organism composed of linked and modular hexagonal clusters. Openness towards the environment and its pleasant climate has been the most sought after spatial quality. In normal conditions students can enjoy ventilation and sunlight, both filtered by the double layer which envelops each classroom. They have also direct access to open elevated playgrounds and they can reach ground level sporting areas through slopes, stairs and ramps.

CLASSROOM DESIGN, RESILIENCE & FLEXIBLE USE
The standard classroom has been designed as a modular unit. Its hexagonal multi-simmetry is intended to consolidate resistance to winds and seismic stress. The elevated platforms (+1m) keep the buildings and playgrounds safe from flooding and soil humidity. Shipping cointainers work as safety shelters in case of extreme weather conditions and protect the classrooms from the main winds as well as from direct noise.

STRUCTURE, TECHNOLOGY, MATERIALS
The double covering is designed according to the local sun path and predominant winds, providing covered circulation and playgrounds. It's also designed with a 30 degrees pitched roof and highly tensile resistant recycled sail fabric, in order to resist extreme storms.
While the main structural elements are made of glued laminated timber, bamboo permeable walls and ceilings ensure ventilation and sun shading.
