Huentelauquén is a remote rural area located in the southern end of the Atacama desert. Through history, their tenants have organized themselves as gatherers of a huge land span from the Andes through the Pacific Ocean. They teamed up in “Comunidad Agrícola de Huentelauquén” (“Huentelauquén Agrarian Community”), with more than 300 groups of co-owners collaborating together in facing the harsh conditions of these dry lands. A decade ago, the less productive areas surrounding the best beaches were divided into smaller parcel lots of 5.000 square meters each. Some TV stars and the young elite from Santiago started to build up their second homes in these properties. The site in particular has a remarkable view towards the sea and strong winds coming from the south; dry, rocky soil with small bushes and cactae. House was made for a family of 6 people -2 parents and 4 sons and daughters-, expecting to expand in the near future. This group used to visit the site regularly for camping, in order to have a more direct experience of nature when the house was not even built. This house has an “L” shaped floor plan which blocks the wind from the south and views from a road in the east. The “L” block protects a big platform with exceeds the indoor area, thus producing a public space from a private commission. This public platform is used by campers, people who pass by the property and -of course- the owners who spend their weekends in their beach house. In the longer branch of this “L” there are several rooms connected only towards the outdoor areas, thus emulating the direct indoor-outdoor quality of camping experience; in the shorter branch there is one free-plan space, concentrating all of the family's semi-public activities (kitchen, living and dining room). The entire structure is made out of reinforced concrete with exposed finish, related to the abandoned concrete structures nearby, and the glass facade will endure the salty and dry weather of Huentelauquén.
