[EN] - benwirthlicht has been charged with planning the lighting for the new premises of the Burn-Out Diagnostics Institute (b.o.d.i.) at Harras. Closely cooperating with the architects of Munich-based firm kip-architekten, who designed the overall plan for the new therapy center in Plinganserstraße, Ben Wirth developed an innovative lighting concept that is equally attuned to the needs of burnout patients, doctors and therapists. Ben Wirth’s award-winning modular lighting system for LED and OLED called Cluster+ is at the heart of a light design that is all about creating mood and ambience with high quality illuminants, taking into account sustainability and efficiency. The setup’s eye-catcher is an impressively gleaming LED/OLED light installation using ORBEOS OLEDs by OSRAM.

56 OLED and 6 LED modules adorn the 3.75 m of wall in the new practice’s waiting area. The installation, which looks like a gleaming organic ribbon, is controlled by various random parameters: The soft, diffuse light of the OLEDs, who light up in smooth cycles and varying numbers, aims at having a soothing effect on the patients in the waiting area – a kind of decelerator in our hectic times. The idea for this design springs from b.o.d.i.’s therapeutic approach of stimulating mitochondria, the cell’s powerhouses, to cure chronic fatigue syndromes. Mitochondria supply the cells with energy and ensure the production of adenosine triphosphate, the ‘molecular unit of currency’ of intracellular energy transfer. The light installation represents the vivid exchange between cells and mitochondria through the alternation of LED (mitochondria) and OLED (cells) modules, as well as through the cyclical switching of individual OLED modules. In order to take up the soft shades of green and blue characterizing the practice’s color scheme, the Cluster modules have been anodized in blue.

In general, the light design focussed on the creation of a soft, agreeable ambient lighting. In addition to the various Cluster modules on the ceiling, the architecture has been fitted with other light sources, of whom only the light (and not the lamps itself) can be experienced. This indirect lighting of individual wall or ceiling areas is being wonderfully supplemented by the directed light of the LED Cluster modules.

The modern design and lighting of their new premises in Plinganserstraße underline Dr. Burghardt and Dr. Hierl’s innovative approach in treating burnout patients and is meant to convey a positive mood of tranquility and relaxation.

The project was concluded in August 2013.
