Yucca is located at Mansion 26F in Sinan Mansions, in a prominent, traditionally-styled building of the former Shanghai French Concession. The building is the headquarters of Yucca’s creator, Australian-Greek renowned Chef David Laris, and it also houses three of his other restaurants: The Fat Olive, a Greek trattoria, 12 Chairs, a new premium dining and The Funky Chicken, a new venture in chic fast food. Perched on the third floor, Yucca is a swanky Mexican lounge featuring modern chic atmosphere and eyecatching décor with a mismatch of styles and colors. The word “Mexican” vis-à-vis restaurants and bars tends to conjure up a host of tired old clichés and stereotypes: cacti, sombreros, holsters, bandoliers, cracked stucco exposing faux adobe bricks or the obligatory Frida Kahlo portrait for those places attempting to “class it up”. The designer - Thomas Dariel - behind Yucca did not want any of that. Far from being folkloric, Yucca pays homage to the rich visual cultures of Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula. Fashionably Latin, Yucca’s quirky yet chic and sleek interior design features a rich combination of shocking colors. The walls are splashed in vivid hues of blue and pink, the floor is a study in op art with a mosaic of tailored blue and white tiles in geometric formations laid out at haphazard angles. A photograph of blue-hued women festooned with Moorish designs extends from the entrance up the double-high wall to the top-floor lounge. A spiral staircase leads to a tiny lounge area for private parties where ones can overlook the entire space and feel the vibes coming up. The glowing glass-topped marble bar with the inscription “DESEO FUERZA AMOR LUJURIA” embodies the spirit of the space. Color combination, pattern on the floor, natural light arrangement, etc.: working together, these elements promote close interaction among the people enjoying their time in this room. Definitely for social purposes, it is as cheerful as inspiring. Intimate, Yucca is a place intended for mixing and mingling. “We imagined an exuberant place where one can go to be inspired, a place where your imagination can run free and you can be inspired by your friends,” Yucca’s crazy, modern Mexican feel conjures up thoughts of Salvador Dali, Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo. Religious undertones, spanish-style custom-made mosaics, vibrant and eclectic blues tall candelabra, catholic crosses, elaborate flooring, paisley armchairs, iron gates, a sheer number of elements bringing this spirit of exuberance while being warm, cosy and harmonious.
