Our starting point for designing the new Hilti Turkey and Central Asia Headquarters Office was an image of a dynamic and transparent office space reflecting the Hilti corporate culture with a contemporary design aesthetic. Our main goals were to combine “new office” design features with Hilti office functionality and utilizing the entire space without waste of square footage and incorporating Hilti products in the design to let the company’s superior products and service to stand out. The rapid advance of wireless connectivity made possible for an office concept that is almost entirely open, flush with common spaces, facilitating interaction between co-workers and allowing for an entertaining work environment. As Hilti embraced the main theme of this “new office” concept, which can be summarized as “no one owns anything, everyone owns everything”, we were able to interpret the spatial organization of the work stations accordingly. The central idea was derived from the corporate character of Hilti. In any construction project and at all stages of construction Hilti has something to offer. This inspired our design of the new office space. While refraining from elaborate and fine detailing we emphasized plain and practical details one would expect from a neat construction site. Open office implementation requires a balance between common spaces, intersection points that direct in-office traffic to facilitate interaction and cooperation between coworkers on the one hand and availability of personal space and privacy when needed on the other. Our planning of the office finds this balance in providing an abundance of common space combined with numerous silent rooms and resting spaces that offer some privacy. Transparency, a concept highly emphasized by Hilti, is translated to architectural design in the form of a radical implementation of the “open office” arrangement. The concept is taken to the extreme where even the CEO does not have an enclosed office. When privacy and quiet is needed, a number of meeting and focus areas are available to all Hilti employees. In order to cater to the leisure and resting needs of the employees, we designed a resting space that includes a spacious open kitchen, a gaming area, plug-in station and a siesta room. At every stage of the project and construction we incorporated as many Hilti products -especially the products that differentiate from the market norm to showcase the difference of Hilti- as possible. In order to highlight the wide range of products we incorporated rough and finished surfaces and a range of materials together. Mainly for this reason many concrete surfaces were left exposed, all mechanical and electrical systems kept uncovered so that all the installation details are always visible and at the forefront.
