The Varatojo House is placed on a Hill, east from the city of Torres Vedras, Portugal. Set in a polygonal configuration plot and given its sun exposure (predominantly North/South) and also its main Northern wind direction, the design strategy began by considering the following issues:   :: Promoting relationship between building and landscape, taking advantage of the place's overlooking position over the city, castle and surroundings;   :: Encouraging a strong complementarity between the house and the garden in order to create an intense visual relation between the inside and the outside, between construction and natural elements;   :: Creating transversal relations between the North Side - (view) and the South side - (inner garden) mainly through the pool on the lower floor and modeling land of the garden;   :: Recycling of materials such as the walls of wooden pilings (former railway sleepers), introducing a certain experimentalism and innovation from the way the material is usually used for and thought to be; :: Encouraging the use of native vegetation in the garden. DESIGN CONCEPT: The house is shaped by a spiral gesture intending to take advantage of the plot outline. We opted for the construction of a limit, a kind of line that gradually takes shape and thickness to accommodate the housing program. This gesture starts with the ramped access to the lot and ends on the opposite side of the house, achieving at this point two-stories high, thereby the contour of the house also reinforced this "gesture in spiral". The adopted design strategy allowed us to create a living space on the site’s south side, protected from the strong Northern winds, which forced the existence of the main construction on the north side. PROGRAM: From a functional standpoint, the program is distributed in three floors. The groundfloor centralizes most of the program. There is located the common areas - kitchen, living room and dining room - constrained to a single and continuous open space, enhanced by the ceilling plan. On the other hand, the rooms’ wing (with a much more restricted access) contains guest and children's rooms, separated by a playing/studying room. On the 1st floor is located the master bedroom with a deep balcony facing North, and on the South, there is a bathroom with a big window facing a small garden as its background. Still on this floor there is a library, a mezzanine space over the living space.   On the lower floor the pool is the central space through where it is possible to connect with both north sights and south private garden, and also to enjoy the reflected landscape on the water.   MATERIAL OPTIONS: On one hand we opted for the use of traditional materials and coatings, as exemplified by the cementitious materials, plaster, timber and cork, and, on the other hand, we considered the reuse of railway sleepers within a distinct logic of its conventional use introducing some innovation and experimentation in the search for new possibilities of materials’ use. Thus we suggest new interpretations from the current and traditional construction, through design but also through material options. VEGETATION: ELASTICITY AND PLASTICITY Define a grove of Quercus faginea subssp. broteroi (Portuguese oak), seeded the phytogeographic association where the plot is located. The dominant choice of native vegetation for the garden (trees, shrubs and herbaceous) takes advantage of site soil and climate characteristics, creating an ecological system integrated into the Landscape of the Region (Genius loci). On the North hillside, a Kermes oak shrubland, appear in a limestone substrate. Exposed to the wind, the Kermes oak shrubland have as main actors the Quercus coccifera and mastic (Pistacia lentiscus) that associates with various species such as: the Mediterranean buckthorn (Rhamnus alaternus); the Flax-leaved Daphne (Daphne gnidium); the Sage-leaved Rock Rose (Cistus salvifolius); the Lusitanian gorse (Ulex densus); the Rough bindweed (Smilax aspera) and the Etruscan honeysuckle (Lonicera etrusca). On the sheltered South side, arises the Portuguese oak with arborescent shrubs like Laurustinus (Viburnum tinus); the single-seed Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna); the Laurel (Laurus nobilis) and herbaceous like Bear`s breeches (Acanthus mollis) and yellow irises (Iris pseudacorus). Implantada num lote de configuração poligonal e atendendo simultaneamente à exposição solar (norte/sul) e orientação do vento predominantemente de Norte, a estratégia de desenho passou por considerar os seguintes aspectos: :: Exploração da relação entre construção e paisagem, tirando partido da posição sobranceira do lote em relação à cidade de Torres Vedras, seu Castelo e imediações; :: Promoção das relações de complementaridade e interdependência entre a casa e o jardim, criando intensas relações visuais entre o interior e o exterior; :: Criação de relações de transversalidade entre o lado norte - (vista) e o lado sul - (espaço de estar abrigado), através principalmente do “espaço piscina” no piso -1 e da modelação do terreno no Jardim; :: Reutilização de materiais numa lógica distinta ao uso tradicional, de que são exemplo as sulipas (antigas linhas de caminho de ferro) introduzindo um certo experimentalismo e novidade na forma como estes se aplicam e reciclam; :: Promoção no Jardim do potencial da vegetação autóctone encontrada na envolvência da área de intervenção. CONCEITO: A volumetria da casa resulta de um gesto em espiral cujo desenho tira partido da configuração do lote. Optou-se pela construção de um limite, uma espécie de linha que ganha progressivamente corpo e espessura para alojar o programa de habitação. Este gesto inicia-se com a rampa de acesso ao lote e culmina no lado oposto com a edificação a alcançar dois pisos, reforçando-se também a partir do perfil da casa o gesto em espiral. A estratégia de desenho adoptada permitiu criar um espaço de estar a sul, abrigado dos fortes ventos que se fazem sentir na zona, precipitando igualmente a construção sobre a paisagem a norte. PROGRAMA: Do ponto de vista funcional, o programa distribui-se em três pisos. O piso 0, centraliza a maior parte do programa. Nele localizam-se as áreas sociais - cozinha, sala de estar e jantar - entendidos como um único espaço aberto e continuo, reforçado pelo plano da cobertura. Ainda neste piso localiza-se a zona dos quartos (de acesso mais restrito) - quarto de visitas e quartos das crianças onde uma sala comum destinada à brincadeira e ao estudo faz a mediação entre estes dois espaços. No piso 1, localiza-se o quarto principal rematado a norte por uma profunda varanda que se precipita sobre a cidade de Torres Vedras, e a sul por um jardim que é pano de fundo da casa de banho. Ainda neste piso e aproveitando a inclinação da cobertura, localiza-se uma biblioteca / zona de trabalho que é mezanino sobre a sala de estar e jantar. No piso -1, a piscina é o espaço central através do qual se promovem as relações de atravessamento entre o lado norte e sul, entre a vista e o jardim, refletindo-se sobre o espelho de água a envolvente exterior. MATERIALIDADE: Optou-se por um lado pelo uso de materiais e revestimentos tradicionais, de que são exemplo os materiais cimenticios, os rebocos, as madeiras e a cortiça, e por outro considerou-se o reuso das sulipas numa lógica distinta do seu uso convencional, introduzindo uma certa inovação e experimentalismo na procura de novas possibilidades de aplicação de materiais. VEGETAÇÃO: PLASTICIDADE E ELASTICIDADE Define-se um bosquete de Quercus faginea subssp.broteroi (Carvalho-português), cabeça de série da associação fitogeográfica onde se insere o lote. A escolha dominante de vegetação autóctone para o jardim (arbórea, arbustiva e herbácea) permite respeitar as características edafoclimáticas do sítio, criando um sistema ecológico integrado na Paisagem da Região (Genius loci). Na encosta do lado Norte, formações subarbustivas e arbustivas – os matos, neste caso designados de Carrascais, aparecem num substrato calcário. Expostos ao vento, os carrascais amoitados têm como principais intervenientes o carrasco (Quercus coccifera) e a aroeira (Pistacia lentiscus) que se associam a diversas espécies tais como: o sanguinho das sebes (Rhamnus alaternus); o trovisco (Daphne gnidium); a estevinha (Cistus salvifolius); o tojo-gatunha (Ulex densus); a salsaparrilha-do-reino (Smilax aspera) e a madressilva-caprina (Lonicera etrusca). No lado Sul abrigado, surge o Carvalho-português; os arbustos-arborescentes como o folhado (Viburnum tinus); o pilriteiro (Crataegus monogyna); o loureiro (Laurus nobilis) e no estrato herbáceo as folhas- de-Acanto (Acanthus mollis) e os lírios amarelos (Iris pseudacorus).
