The Embassy Gardens Marketing Suite is a temporary pavilion which provides a showcase for Ballymore’s development (apartment buildings by Arup Associates, AHMM and Feilden Clegg Bradley). The building is sited adjacent to the proposed US Embassy in Nine Elms. The orientation of the building and its landscape setting have been carefully established to provide a visual marker for the area’s future development, and to allow views both up and down river from a third floor terrace. Set within a garden wall and landscaped meadow the upper levels act as a beacon, visible through the trees as approached from the west and above the wall adjacent to Nine Elms Lane. Design Development The design developed through the concept stage to take account of the cube form of the proposed US Embassy, the use of landscape to form a series of spaces within a garden setting and the opportunity to achieve longer views across the development site and towards key views. Early designs stacked the show apartments around a central core rising up to a terrace, with views along the Thames. The design evolved to provide flexibility for future show apartment installations and to create a clear route through the building, with views out onto the meadowland at ground floor and long views across the river at roof level. The client and design team engaged with the London Borough of Wandsworth, and the proposal was generally supported. Sense of Arrival • Design a building to act as a marker for the area’s development • Development of a new building to accommodate a Marketing Suite for the proposed adjacent development to include exhibition space, show apartments and staff facilities. • Address the potential for refit show apartments over time (to allow for showcasing of future phases of the development) – ensuring that building fabric remains intact. • Consider siting to create a sense of arrival • Maximise potential views from a roof terrace
