The main elements of the urban context that we saw important to connect to were the adjacent Maxxi Museum, the Music Bridge and the Auditorium. In responding to the Maxxi, we created a central square positioned directly in front of the Maxxi. Then we further enhanced this connection by creating a rear pedestrian pathway that runs along with an existing axis and joins the square created across from the Maxxi. In order to harmonize with the Music Bridge, we used its same concept of materials and proportions, highlighting the side pedestrian walkways and the central tramline. Our next goal was to draw a clear link with the Auditorium. Thus we created a portico that extends out into the street, off an existing barracks, and connects to Renzo Piano’s Promenade. Finally, we designed three hills, of three different sizes, positioned on the new site so as to echo Piano’s small, medium, and large Auditoriums.
