“Good design should be available to everyone, regardless of their age, race, or income”. This the idea that drove the design to focus on the use of local building materials and techniques to maximize the budget and resources of the community. Given that most of the schools in the region have major issues of overcrowding and they usually expand with 4-7 “informal” classrooms, the proposed solution introduce the side and front porches as flexible spaces that allow for the addition of alternative classrooms. The roof helps to reduce thermal heat gain, prevents from the noise provoked by the rain and it allows the water catchment through a pre-filtering process. The classrooms are designed to receive indirect natural light and are subject of cross ventilation thanks to the back wall’s arrangement of concrete and earth bocks. All these small details want to improve the quality of the learning spaces to raise the level of education by eliminating distractions and uncomfortable conditions with a design solution that requires low costs and maintenance.
