The House of Fairytales | Pardini Hall Architecture

Once upon a time, there was a house, the house in the fairy tale garden… The form of a simple house journeyed through a historical site leading to specific points of significance creating a fairytale world. The shape of the house is replicated within the structural frame, becoming outstretched as it moves towards the heart of the site. Upon arrival to the historical centre this tension flattens and forms a sympathetic glazed roof, encapsulating the Memorial Hall, and linking the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen with the preserved town houses. The tension from the apex form of the ‘house of fairy tales’ creates the dynamic movement that defines not only the shape of the building, and its stretched form, but also building entry points and the landscapes areas. These include a reinstated apothecary garden, the fairytale sculpture garden and a secret sunken garden. On entering the museum you are greeted with a double height reception space, with a patterned carved screen, inspired by the paper cut-outs of Hans Christian Andersen, before being drawn to the expressive structural form. These describe the tales by way of sculpted characters and engraved text within the structure that leads you deeper into the world of Hans Christian Andersen, his life, works, passing through sensory and experience rooms before discovering the secret garden and beyond.
