Fernandes combined preservation and modernization in the Maracanã project A Fernandes Arquitetos Associados '>http://www.fernandes.arq.br'> is the office responsible for Maracanã's architectural design, the stadium to host the 2014 World Cup finals. The differential in design is in the proposal to make the arena as modern and efficient as the best stadiums in the world, associated with a brand built in over 60 years of history and symbolism. The main challenge is to preserve as much of the existing structure as possible while implementing the necessary improvements through interventions. A new Maracanã "born" within the former, not replaced, but renewed. In this process inevitably some existing structures will be removed to make room for other new elements to be incorporated and the remaining portions recovered. The project maintains, for example, the first three structural axes that today house almost everything that is common and accepted in the stadium. The facade was preserved and, regardless of the point from where it is seen, from the outside Maracanã remains largely intact. Not even the new coating makes a visual impact and one will not be able to see it from the outside. Some major internal circulations and their connections to the existing structure, such as pillars, ceiling, opening, among others, were maintained. In turn, all structures related to services, such as bars and toilets, are entirely new and follow the highest standards. The main changes occur in the design of the stands, where new structures are designed to meet the ideal conditions of visibility, safety and comfort. Parts of the north and south stands will be maintained, as well as its distinctive elliptical design. The grandstands on the sides were approximated to the playing field by 13 meters, creating a significant increase in the gaming experience. As they walk inside the stadium to their seats, spectators can see the first interventions and feel the result of the improvements. Right now, you can experience the full grandeur of the nearly 80,000 refurbished seats and the marking presence of the huge, lightweight translucent cover, "floating" lightly, almost without touching the existing structure, crowning and protecting the stadium. The objective is not only to make sure everyone is in Maracanã, but mainly awaken a renewed pride and a sense that Maracanã will be eternal. The roof is one of the main elements that were introduced in stages. Over the past 20 years, virtually every major stadium - new or refurbished, have a roof. This movement is directly linked to the need to increase the overall comfort of all users and major functional areas such as the press. Modernization In the case of Maracanã, its meaning and importance are the fruit of 60 years of accumulated history with thousands of matches and events that took place there, as well as the many emotions experienced individually and collectively. The best way to preserve its history and memory is by giving it the necessary conditions for it to continue on in its mission for many years. Inside the new post World Cup reality, the stadium would have only two alternatives different from the one chosen. The first would be its demolition and the construction of a new stadium on the same site. The second, the construction of a new stadium elsewhere and keeping Maracanã as it was before the works. In the first case it would have been a complete wastage since the stadium would cease to exist as would the direct memory bound to its physical element. In the second case, the Maracanã would not cease to exist, but would be in disuse since it would gain a far superior competitor in terms of quality, comfort, security and infrastructure. In this case, undoubtedly the best way to preserve Maracanã and all it represents is to modernize it and return it to being one of the major stadiums in the world for the next 30 to 40 years.
