A Venice Beach, alcune fra le case-manifesto progettate da architetti quali Frank Gehry, Antoine Predock, Dean Nota, Johnstone Marklee e Morphosis, sorgono alternate a residenze dallo stile vittoriano o a case abbandonate. Passeggiando per le vie del quartiere (frequentate quotidianamente da artisti di strada, surfisti, venditori ambulanti, turisti, homeless), si nota come l’anticonformismo e la libertà di espressione dei passanti sul front walk si rispecchino nelle architetture e nello stile degli edifici. Venice è anche sede di numerosi studi di architetti e designer, molti dei quali hanno iniziato proprio progettando strutture in linea coi dettami modernisti e presenti nel quartiere. Questo particolare aspetto, unito alla reale assenza in L.A. di uno spazio espositivo che celebrasse il pensiero e le opere dei maestri del modernismo, è stato un elemento fondamentale per l’ideazione del museo e per la scelta del lotto di progetto. Il Californian House Museum è il museo della casa californiana dal modernismo a oggi. Dalla formazione della tipologia abitativa delle Pueblo Houses sino alla casa contemporanea, passando per il periodo del Case Study House Program e dei maestri dell’International Style. Il museo comprende inoltre uno spazio espositivo dedicato agli architetti, designer e artisti emergenti, un video-internet point, un bookstore con sala di lettura, un lounge bar e un auditorium-cinema per conferenze e proiezioni. Il naturale affaccio rivolto all’oceano rappresenta lo spunto principale per l’intero progetto, poiché richiama il forte legame tra architettura ed elemento naturale, tematica fondamentale dei maestri dello stile moderno quali Wright, Schindler, Neutra, Lautner e Kappe. Il CAL. HOUSE MUSEUM è uno spazio espositivo a diretto contatto con l’oceano e con i passanti sul lungomare; un museo che nelle proporzioni e nel design degli interni, rispecchia l’ambiente tipico delle stesse residenze californiane esposte al suo interno.
