Designing this space for children led us to a journey through time and space in search of that restlessness that exists in the background of all beings , the imagery that makes us dream and we always seek whenever we need our most childish and creative essence . This new place, existing but now refurbished, is an opportunity to create a retreat for young people, where they could set free all their creativity. In order to achieve this, it will be essential to use color to stimulate the spatial and visual perception, so the color psychology has become one of the fundamental assumptions we have dealt with in this intervention. The existing space was defined by two large rooms and a large hall, whose initial function was associated with corporate events. The need to create a multipurpose room was defined in the program – large and versatile, allowing different uses; a reading room – dedicated to academic support, watching films, reading books and educational use of computer equipment; a visual arts room – whose main function would be the crafts and visual expression; and finally a more playful room, dedicated to fun and physical games. Based on these programmatic needs, the spaces were adapted retaining the most of the existing structures, however a logic of adding new elements was adopted – shall it be new forms, colors, textures, graphics – that in the end could reflect a symbolism that would allow who enter into this space to be transported to a dreamlike reality. This challenge that we put on ourselves led us to wander around and get away from the usual architectural thinking guidelines, forcing us to dematerialize some notions of spatial equilibrium, so we could get to such a detachment from the established reality notions, that in the end would allow us to create a space above all playful and distinct for children. Each new designed room has unique features, in a sense tells a different story, it’s a destination per say. In all of them there are new design elements that are combined with surprising colors, helping contextualize the spaces in a very particular way. The corridor is the unifying space that communicates with all rooms and adds together the spatial and formal language. The different arches, which are the main distinctive feature of the corridor, symbolize a passage, a promenade for little princesses and small kings, but also serve as a window display for the different rooms/functions. The Reading Room, where was created a small amphitheater, allows children to draw and write around this huge blackboard that also can become a huge screen, for movies and cartoons. The Room for Visual Arts gives primacy to curves and organic shapes and vibrant colors to stimulate visual expression. The huge blue ceiling sparkled with white lamps is a reminiscent of a starry sky, while the pierced walls uncover small hiding spaces and create unique visual effects. In the Play Room, the green carpet dilutes the ground with the wall which in turn is wrapped in a set of colored slopes deconstructing the ceiling. The last room at the end of this magical corridor is assumed to be the most versatile space, which is defined as an open area and a playful space that is distinguished by its tetris color mountain and a small stage for theatrics. Nevertheless, the most rewarding aspect of this project is still to come… the time to see how different children adapt and appropriate this space as their own, the time to observe how this dream world created by adults can fit in a child’s imagination. In the end we aspire that this new space that has been reborn with lively colors, unusual shapes and unique features could help achieve the children’s full potential. \\ Projectar este espaço para crianças levou-nos a uma viagem no tempo e no espaço, na busca daquela inquietude que existe no fundo de todos os seres, do imaginário que nos faz sonhar e que procuramos sempre que necessitamos da nossa essência mais infantil e criativa. Este novo espaço, existente mas agora remodelado, seria uma oportunidade para criar um refúgio para os mais novos, um lugar onde pudessem dar asas a toda a sua criatividade. Para isso, será fundamental a aplicação de cor de modo a estimular a percepção do espacial e visual, pelo que a psicologia da cor se tornou uma das premissas fundamentais com que abordámos esta intervenção. O espaço existente definia-se através de duas grandes salas e um grande hall, cuja função inicial estava associada a eventos corporativos. No novo programa estipulado havia a necessidade de criar uma sala polivalente – ampla e versátil, que permitisse diferentes usos, uma sala de leitura – dedicada ao apoio escolar, visionamento de filmes, leitura de livros, uso de material informático didáctico; uma sala de artes plásticas – cuja principal função seriam os trabalhos manuais e expressão visual; e por último uma sala mais lúdica, vocacionada para a diversão e jogos motricionais. Com base nestas necessidades programáticas, adaptaram-se os espaços mantendo ao máximo as estruturas existentes, acabando por se adoptar uma lógica de adição de elementos novos – sejam estes novas formas, cores, texturas, elementos gráficos – que pudessem estar carregados de um simbolismo que permitisse a quem entrasse neste espaço que fosse transportado para uma realidade onírica. Este desafio que colocámos a nós mesmos, levou-nos a deambular e a fugir de lugares comuns, obrigou-nos a desmaterializar algumas noções de equilíbrio plástico, de forma a podermos nos aproximar dum desprendimento mental que permitisse criar um espaço acima de tudo lúdico e distinto para crianças de palmo e meio. Cada espaço novo idealizado tem características únicas, conta uma história diferente, é um destino diferente nesta viagem. As formas criadas conjugam-se com cores surpreendentes, que contextualizam os espaços de forma particular. O corredor é o espaço aglutinador, que comunica com todas as salas e as agrega na linguagem espacial e formal. Os diferentes arcos que o caracterizam simbolizam passagens, uma galeria para pequenas princesas e pequenos reis desfilarem, servindo também de montra para as diferentes salas. Na Sala de Leitura a criação de um pequeno anfiteatro permite que as crianças se juntem em torno de um enorme plano preto em tinta de ardósia que se transforma numa enorme tela, para histórias e lendas. Ou somente para se sentarem de forma intuitiva em redor de uma sessão de cinema. A Sala de Artes Plásticas dá primazia a formas curvas e orgânicas e a cores vibrantes, de modo a estimular a expressão visual. O enorme azul do tecto com apontamentos de candeeiros lembra um céu estrelado, enquanto as paredes furadas escondem esconderijos e efeitos visuais únicos. Na Sala da Brincadeira, o tapete verde dilui a superfície do chão com a parede que por sua vez é embrulhado num jogo de planos inclinados coloridos que desconstroem o tecto. A última sala, ao fundo deste corredor mágico, assume-se como o espaço mais versátil, no qual foi definida uma área livre e um espaço lúdico que se distingue pela montanha tétrica de cores e um palco para pequenas encenações teatrais. Porém o mais gratificante estará por chegar… o tempo de verificar como as diferentes crianças se adaptam e apropriam este espaço como sendo delas, constatar como é que este mundo onírico criado por adultos pode caber no imaginário infantil. No fim esperamos que este espaço novo que renasceu com cores alegres, formas inusitadas e características peculiares possa despontar nos mais novos toda a sua potencialidade.
