CONCRETE SCULPTURE STUDIO | OOOOX
reconstruction of Maratka's sculpture studio Prague / Czech Rep. / 2013
36
Original condition - it is a terraced sculpture studio in the courtyard of a development in Letna. One of the most
important sculptors who created in these premises is Josef Mařatka. Czechoslovakia's first president TG
Masaryk sat here in 1918-1919 as a model for a bust. The original studio consisted of one elevated room with
adjacent storage facilities and toilets. The space of the studio was lit by a skylight. The studio was extended by
a small garden in the inner courtyard. Unfortunately, the state of the building was a disaster, which is why
almost all of the elements had to be replaced during reconstruction.
Layout – the new layout respects the original layout and height. The living room has been established in the
elevated space, which is lit again by studio roof glazing. A floor has been inserted into the original mass of the
studio, which is half sunk into the interior, and the other half then protrudes above the original roof. The mass
of the floor is recessed from the perimeters of the studio and visually suppressed. The angled part then
contains the children’s room with a large glassed-in wall to the backyard. Thanks to the recessed floor mass a
small roof garden is created in front of a bathroom. The roof of the studio is planted with extensive greenery.
Facilities are located in the same position as the original. There are two bathrooms, a bedroom, children's
room and a study. The kitchen and dining room is located under the mass of the floor in the sunken area.
Concept/colour/materials - from the exterior the main colour concept is different shades of old and new
materials. The original colouring is in "dirty" grey with green window frames, the new mass is in dark grey with
windows of the same shade. Exposed concrete and white paint with small accents of metallic anthracite paint
on the frame of studio windows, columns and accessories are applied to the interior.
Kitchen and dining room – is consists of a cooking island in anthracite. The high part with appliances is built into
the wall and neighbours the pantry with sliding doors. A trigger hood is installed above the island, which is
complemented by the shape of the downlights. A black “crumpled” light is installed above the dining room
table.
Living room – it is only composed of a large bookcase covering the entire height of the room and an armchair
for reading. The bookcase is designed with the option of mounting additional shelves in the future. In the lower
part, contrasting anthracite boxes of larger depth are formed. The area under the studio skylight is fitted with
the original light, in the same system – i.e. on a steel cable, allowing shifting - as in the original studio.
Bedroom – with regard to the minimum demands of the clients, the bedroom is very simple, almost austere.
Two walls are lined with a continuous upper window, the height of which is given by the degree of “sinking” of
the mass floor in the mass of the original studio. The bedroom is made up of two beds and a built-in wardrobe,
which conceals a small work corner in one area.
Bathroom – thanks to its location in the layout, a window was formed with a lowered sill, which provides
natural light. On the other hand, the rim of the studio mass, complete with greenery, provides the bathroom
with privacy. The bathroom is done in white screed. The countertop basin in the niche is custom-made from
cast marble and the edging has an opening for hanging towels. The taps are made from polished stainless steel
and the shower hose is completed in combination with white. In the corner of the room there is a chute for
dropping dirty laundry down directly to the laundry room in the basement.
The bottom guest bathroom is made up of only a semi-open shower and leads to the utility room with a
washing machine and closet. The mirror above the washbasin is an original piece.
Children’s room - it has the largest window for maximum natural light, plus it faces west over the garden. The
room is furnished with a large built-in wardrobe, the doors of which are made of magnet boards. Accessories – the interior is equipped with accessories, which are now apart of the extended services called
LooooX = Luxury by OOOOX.
