The Glencorse Water Treatment works replaces an ageing system and is now delivering clearer, fresher drinking water to 450,000 customers across Edinburgh and parts of Midlothian. BDP designed the buildings and landscape and their sensitive integration on a rural site on the edge of the Pentland Hills overlooking the city of Edinburgh. The project is highly sustainable and boasts Scotland’s largest green roof which undulates over the buildings and water storage tanks effectively creating a new hill. The project now provides all the capital’s needs for fresh drinking water well into the future. It generates much of its own power needs through gravity hydro-turbines, whilst encouraging bio-diversity through surrounding drainage wetlands. The project has now received a CEEQUAL Excellent, Whole Project Award achieving a final score of 84.5%.
