Fahad Al Salem Street What was once the most iconic boulevard in the entire region (becoming the highlight of the middle east) has transformed into a deteriorated state comprised from rundown two story buildings and low income commercial stores. Although, there has been an attempt to revive the street by demolishing some of these rundown buildings, the fact remains that the street in general has yet to transform into an avenue that would return Kuwait City on the world map as a leader and innovator. A proper vision of the future is needed to achieve this, one that takes into account Kuwait’s heritage and culture, and brings back into light the iconic elements that allowed Kuwait City to become the center of the region. Challenges When faced with the challenge of reviving Fahad Al Salem street into the iconic boulevard it once was, one mus first understand the challenges that must first be overcome. To list them, the challenges are as follows: 1. Create an Identity 2. Regulate Vehicular Traffic 3. Revive Gardens and Plazas 4. Create Friendly Pedestrian Facilities 5. Create a City Icon To overcome such challenges, one must ensure that no negative side effects are created. One must tackle a challenge with a solution and ensure that the byproduct remains just that, a solution, and not another challenge. Construction Process The Construction Process is to be developed and implemented in phases. Prioritising that the flow of traffic is not hindered while construction is taking place. Architectural Language The architectural language prescribed to the form is not a typical one, comprised of four elevations and a roof similar to the buildings in the area. The purpose of the floating gardens is to provide a pedestrian lobby for these buildings and not to compete with them architecturally. Real Estate Development The Floating Gardens will provide an opportunity for Real Estate on Fahad Al-Salem Street to flourish. The project will provide incentive for developers to develop towers that do not only focus on offices; it will allow them to venture into developments that range into commercial and entertainment markets; providing better income to the developer and market as a whole.
