Six-metre tall red trees have sprouted through the tables in the common area. An interactive digital sculpture floats in the foyer like a planet in space, and green, yellow and blue patterns on the walls serve as graphic landmarks throughout the building. The University College of Northern Denmark has been given a distinctive design that supports the achievements of its visions. University College of Northern Denmark (UCN) aims to be a leading provider of future-oriented education. Rosan Bosch has developed a design that ties the education programmes together and promotes interaction, cooperation and knowledge sharing. With its new interior, UCN now has a learning environment that facilitates new ways of working and learning for students, lecturers and consultants. Cave-like lounge areas encourage relaxed interactions and focused concentration. Interactive platforms enable knowledge sharing across disciplinary boundaries, and the common areas are incorporated into the course activities, which gives students greater insight into each other’s everyday activities. Everything is tied together by graphic elements in wallpaper designs and collages that act as identity markers for the individual programmes. The new interior design at UCN was developed with the goal of facilitating cooperation and communication as key aspects of learning. At the Centre for Educational Ressources (CFU), the new design serves as a tool to rethink the centre’s professional competencies with new means for communication and interaction. In the centre of the building one finds the “Planet”, a huge digital sculpture that serves as a communication platform connecting the many education programmes offered at UCN. The sculpture serves both an involving and an informative purpose and links the students together across disciplinary boundaries. The new interior has given UCN a distinct profile with inviting common areas that highlight both internal and external activities. The spatial design also promotes the educational principles and serves as an active instrument of learning and development in everyday activities.
