Kalorias restaurant | estúdio AMATAM

The starting point was a restaurant inside a Health Club that has become obsolete and lost its charisma during the years. We were asked to design a new concept for this space, however maintaining as possible the existing structures, having always in mind a reduced but sufficient budget. Strategically we decided to create new elements within the space, with unique features that allows to surprise, resulting in the preservation of the existing elements. Also a new space hierarchy was designed, through the manipulation of the ceiling heights, the use of specific colors, and the creation of permeable surfaces with motives that are replied in different locations, allowing by this the possibility of having unique interior environments according with the time of the day and the purpose of the meal. The lightning was rethought and adjusted to the new concept. For the restaurant decoration new principles where taken in order to create a brand new identity, more up-to-date but also that might reflect the culture and the traditions, or we won’t be talking about a Portuguese Cuisine Restaurant! Handcrafted clay and cork lamps were acquired, and popular Portuguese food related sayings where placed in the walls, reminding the old plates in the rural kitchen houses. Those who will enter might feel a new and contemporary reinterpretation of what means to be a Portuguese Restaurant. // Um restaurante localizado num Health Club que, devido aos seus longos anos, se desactualizou e perdeu o seu encanto. Pediram-nos para desenvolver uma nova imagem para este espaço mantendo, sempre que possível, as estruturas existentes manipulando para isso um orçamento parco mas suficiente. Estrategicamente optámos por criar novos elementos com uma linguagem própria que criam algum impacto e que permitem que a restante área se preserve. Criámos uma diferente hierarquia de espaços, através da manipulação das alturas do teto falso, do uso da cor, e da criação de planos permeáveis, possibilitando diferentes ambiências consoante a altura do dia, e o propósito da refeição. A iluminação foi repensada e ajustada. A decoração seguiu novos princípios, criar uma nova identidade, mais atual mas também com alusões à nossa cultura e tradição, não fosse este um restaurante de comida portuguesa. Descobriram-se candeeiros artesanais em porcelana e barro, e numa alusão aos pratos tradicionais nacionais colocados nas paredes, desenhámos e colocámos os nossos provérbios populares relacionados com a gastronomia, forma de arte por excelência neste espaço. Quem entrar talvez sinta uma nova reinterpretação contemporânea do que significa ser um restaurante português.
