The creation of a Stanley Kubrick’s exhibition brought us the challenge of presenting contents that are full of signs, without resignifying or reinterpreting it, but reforcing its ideas. Along with the crew of MIS (Image and Sound Museum), we conceived a narrative and imersive scenography that could translate the director`s universe. Starting from Kubrick`s films aesthetics, that had the photografy and the art direction really highlighted, almost expressionists, along with its denses narratives, we identified a constant tension on his films, that we used as a conceptual begging for the project: proposing to the visitor a dense, tense and imersive experience on Kubrick`s universe. So, based on an idea of a “dark ride” the visitor is invited to get into a room to another, passing thought dark transition spaces that prepare him to each new incoming surprise. Each room was designed in a way to reproduce the essence of each film. The design of the rooms was based on three guidelines: identification of the sensations and emotions caused by them, for exemple, the enclausure in “Paths of Glory” and “The Shinning” rooms, or the emabarassment of “Eyes Wide Shut”; the materiality based on the color pallete, textures, lighting and scene composition, exemplified by the painting textures and simmetry in “Barry Lyndon`s”, the multi-information and vibrant colors from “Clockwork Orange” or The sensual and delicate pink lace walls in “Lolita`s; and finally, the photography and camera movements, exemplified in “2001: Space odissey” where a blinking light wall gives the sensation of constant movement, as if we were in orbit. The Sound design had, as well, an important role to the creation of ambience to these imersive spaces. Pieces of the film’s soundtracks complete the experience of the visitor-actor. - October 11, 2013, through January 12, 2014 The exhibition was organized by the Deutsches Filmmuseum, Frankfurt am Main, Christiane Kubrick, and the Stanley Kubrick Archive at the University of the Arts London, with the support of Warner Bros.
