Trutschweg House | MoDus Architects

The site is located on the periphery of the city center of Caldaro overlooking a lake at the foot of a mountain-range. Result of an invited competition, the clients issued a project brief describing the climatic peculiarities of the site, inviting the architect to respond to the various ways they would ideally like to live the change in seasons over the course of the year. Characterized by significant jumps in temperature, and marked by two prevailing kinds of winds (hot and cold), the house navigates the sloped site with a series of variegated outdoor spaces that pinwheel off the main body of the house.

The house is comprised of four floors and is accessed by a lower court that gives onto the garage. This lower level houses service spaces along with a dining area complete with fireplace and wine cellar used during the winter months for entertaining guests. The main entry is located on the upper “ground floor” which opens onto the triple height foyer, the core of the house. The fireplace and the main staircase cluster around this pivotal space to create a dynamic center from which the various living quarters radiate outwards.

The main volume of the house hovers above the ground floor by way of a continuous glass and bronze façade to provide a continuum between the living areas and the surrounding garden. This sense of openness is carried through the rest of the house by the adjacency of outdoor terraces and by the large apertures punctuating the striated, stucco façade.

Der Bauplatz liegt in der Peripherie des alten Ortskern von Kaltern, mit atemberaubenden Blick auf den See am Fuße des Berghanges. Die Bauherren haben mit der präzise formulierten Projektausschreibung bezüglich der einzigartigen klimatischen Rahmenbedingungen des Ortes mehrere Architekten eingeladen, in einem Projektbeitrag festzuhalten wie sie idealerweise den Wandel der Jahreszeiten übers Jahr selbst erleben möchten.
Von hohen Temperaturschwankungen und markanten Winden (heiß und eiskalt) charakterisiert, zieren abgestufte, abwechslungsreiche Freiräume, wie ein Windmühlenrad den umliegenden Hang des Gebäudes.

Mit anmutender Leichtigkeit schwebt das Gebäude über dem von Glas und Bronzeblech dominierten Erdgeschoss und schafft so Kontinuität zwischen den Wohnräumen und den Gärten. Dieser Gedanke zeichnet sich im ganzen Gebäude mit vorgelagerten Terrassen oder großflächigen Öffnungen in den strukturierten Fassaden ab.

Das Haus besteht aus vier Geschossen und wird von einem tiefer gelegenem Hof, der zur Garage führt erschlossen. Diese Ebene dient als Servicegeschoss, beherbergt aber auch eine Küche mit Essbereich und offener Feuerstelle, die im Winter für Feiern genutzt wird. Der Haupteingang liegt im höher gelegenen Erdgeschoss und öffnet sich direkt auf das dreigeschossige Foyer, das Herzstück des Gebäudes. Dieses verankert das Haus, um eine zentrale Feuerstelle mit Treppe und folgt so dem Leitgedanken eines zentralen, dynamischen Raums an den sich sämtliche Wohnräume anbinden.

Situato sul bordo di un declivio che domina il lago di Caldaro, l’edificio è il risultato di un concorso privato in cui i clienti richiedevano un progetto che rispondesse alle peculiarità climatiche del sito e permettesse di vivere nella sua interezza il passaggio delle stagioni. Il sito è caratterizzato da importanti escursioni termiche e dal vento (caldo e freddo). La casa, emergendo dalla forte pendenza della montagna, si configura con una serie di differenti spazi esterni che ruotano attorno al corpo principale della casa.

Il volume principale poggia su una facciata continua in vetro e bronzo che racchiude il piano terreno con un intenso e diretto rapporto tra gli spazi di vita interni e il giardino che li circonda. Questo senso di apertura e slancio verso il paesaggio si ritrova in tutto il resto della casa, dove gli spazi comuni o privati sono in diretto contatto con le diverse terrazze esterne, e la facciata compatta in intonaco rigato è definita da grandi aperture finestrate.

La casa si sviluppa verticalmente su quattro piani; a livello della strada d’accesso si trovano garage e gli ambienti di servizio e una sala interrata per le feste.
Al piano superiore, si trova l’ingresso principale con un ampio vano centrale a tripla altezza, che diviene il fulcro della casa. Il grande camino in pietra e la scala principale ruotano attorno a questo dinamico spazio centrale su cui si attestano i vari spazi di vita della casa su tutti i piani.
