First prize in International Competition organized by AENA (Spanish Airports & Air Navigation). The purpose of the project was to develop a modern and competitive infrastructure to boost Zaragoza and to provide the city with a representative gate during the International Expo Zaragoza 2008. We sought not only for an answer to the international traffic generated during the Expo 2008, but also to open up the city to European traffic, becoming a new touristic destination. The terminal building responds to a simple geometry based on eleven staggered modules which results in a wavy movement shape that reinforces the building character through the roof and turns it into an icon. The design emphasizes the functionality and responds to three basic principles: flexibility (modular structure allowing a multi-stage growth), clarity (the spatial configuration accompanies the sequence of the user through the building) and maximization of sunlight presence (including roof lights in areas where passengers spend longer time). The most representative and iconic element of the structure is the roof; thanks to its wavy surface, it reminds us of the main theme in the Expo 2008: water and sustainable development. Environmental responsibility was a main priority in the design; a simple geometry allows not only an optimum layout but also extensive use of natural light contributing to energy savings. A rectangular layout facilitates passengers’ flows and reduces waiting and circulation time, furthermore enhanced by dynamic check-in and boarding procedures. The terminal’s operational areas are located on the main floor, including check-in services, departures and arrivals. Offices, multi-purpose areas and a panoramic deck are located on the first floor. Outside, the landscape design has sought the preservation of existing green areas through a pine reforestation plan. AENOR Energy Efficiency Certificate 2012. Project shortlisted for the Mies Van der Rohe 2009 International Prize.
