Sin is the name of the new bookshop, bar and restaurant which has just opened on Lake Orta. As soon as you touch the door handle you get an inkling of what is to come – the handle is in the form of a sketch of quill pen and a glass. When you open the door you get the idea that you are entering a fluid space. The counter made of white corian reaches out across the amphitheatre to the bookshop like a ribbon projecting itself on the scarlet neon of the ceiling. Moving further inside there is a room with a vaulted veiled ceiling where a pyramid-shaped terraced tower rises. Almost like a ziggurat where priests worshipped the divinities of the Mesopotamian pantheon the rituals of eating, drinking and reading are practised here. The pyramid has a modular structure so it can be adapted to the varying needs of the palate and the mind. A similar flexibility can be found in a lamp with sixteen arms and the rectangular table in the lunch area, which can be split up and regrouped in a variety of compositions. This is a succession of monochrome spaces, which thread their way through space without a sense of continuity. The spaces fit together like Chinese boxes and the architectural plan is like a story within a story with the same seductive energy as the Thousand and One Nights. ____________________________________________________ Sul lago d’Orta nasce Sin, una libreria che è anche un bar con cucina. Già la maniglia insospettisce quando si appoggia la mano, è il disegno schizzato di un penna da calamaio e di un bicchiere. Quando si apre la porta si ha la percezione di entrare in uno spazio liquido. Il bancone di corian bianco si allunga nell’anfiteatro e nella libreria come in un nastro che si proietta nel neon scarlatto del soffitto. Più in là al centro di un stanza con una volta a vele campeggia una torre piramidale a più piani sovrapposti. Come in una ziggurath dove i sacerdoti onoravano le divinità del pantheon mesopotamico, si compiono i rituali del cibo del bere e della lettura. La struttura piramidale è a moduli componibili. Può trasformarsi e assecondare così le diverse esigenze del palato e della mente. La stessa trasformabilità si ritrova nel lampadario a sedici bracci e nel tavolo rettangolare della zona lunch che si spezza e si ricompone in una varietà di composizioni. Una sequenza di ambienti monocromi che si snodano senza soluzione di continuità. I volumi si inseriscono uno nell’altro come scatole cinesi e il racconto del progetto architettonico si svolge in una narrazione dentro la narrazione, con la stessa energia seduttiva delle Mille e una notte.
