Extension-Restructuration | Loïc Picquet Architecte

Located in a residential area of SaintLouis (France), this renovation project focuses on the thermal improvement of a workingclass house and on the creation of a small extension to its kitchen. To make economies on the budget, the extension is supported on the old concrete patio and gives it thus its dimensions. The framework of the extension had to remain light, that’s why the wood was chosen as the right material to build it. The project approach is that the kitchen may be a part of the garden and viceversa. Thus, the entire ground floor is reorganized to enhance the projection of the kitchen into the garden. A large opening is also done on the northeast facade (this orientation does not require the set up of a special thermal protection because the sun disappears from the front in midmorning). To create a connection that allows kitchen and garden to be part of one and other, a fully transparent wall was built with a large bay window with a frame, which applied from the outside, disappears completely inside. This "invisible wall" is then punctuated with an opening for ventilation. The window seems to float in the facade since it is applied directly in the glass. This unique and revolutionary process was a real challenge in its implementation. This “invisible wall” offers to people who see through it a surprise involving an unusual and sensitive experience. To access to housing, a staircase was built on a concrete volume with sleek dimensions. Its texture and massiveness contrast to the glazing giving both a smooth harmony. The access building, made entirely of wood, is coated with larch cladding pierced by a multitude of stars, reflecting in an imaginary way the sky we can see at night through the kitchen. [FR] Situé dans un quartier pavillonnaire de StLouis, ce projet de réhabilitation se penche sur l'amélioration thermique de la maison ouvrière et sur la création d'une petite extension à la cuisine. Pour réaliser des économies, l'extension trouve son appuis sur l'ancienne terrasse en béton et lui en donne ainsi ses dimensions. L'ossature de l'extension doit demeurer légère. Elle sera réalisée en bois. Dans le projet, la démarche adoptée va s’intéresser à littéralement projeter la cuisine dans le jardin. Ainsi, l'ensemble du rezdechaussée est réorganisé de manière à renforcer ce rapport . Une large ouverture est pratiquée sur la façade nordest. (Cette orientation ne nous contraint pas à la mise en place d'une protection thermique particulière car le soleil disparaît de la façade en milieu de matinée.) Le mur de l'extension qui « regarde » le jardin va se dématérialiser au point de devenir un mur totalement transparent par le biais d'une grande baie vitrée dont le cadre, appliqué par l'extérieur, disparaît totalement de l'intérieur. Ce « mur invisible » est ensuite ponctué d'une ouverture qui permet la ventilation. Par sa mise en oeuvre, cette fenêtre semble flotter totalement dans la façade car elle est directement appliqué dans le vitrage. Ce procédé unique et révolutionnaire à constitué un véritable défi dans sa mise en oeuvre. La surprise qu'il procure à l'usager qui le découvre le plonge immédiatement dans une expérience sensible hors du commun. Côté jardin, pour accéder à l'habitation, on pénètre dans un volume en béton aux dimensions élancées qui contient l'escalier. Sa texture et sa massivité contraste avec le vitrage et le met ainsi en scène. Une remise de jardin prend place dans l'angle de la parcelle. Cette construction, entièrement en bois, est revêtue d'un bardage en mélèze transpercé d'une multitude d'étoiles pour continuer à plonger l'usagé dans un rêve à porté de doigts.
