Slide Apartment

A large lateral conversion in Bayswater has been spatially reconfigured and replanned to provide a large open plan living space and flexible accommodation. The material palette and colour has been simplified so that only two colours predominate: pure white and the very dark brown of the fumed oak floor and kitchen. The new planning allows spaces to open to the light and views, and allows direct access from the large front to back living space onto a rear roof terrace, which is wrapped in iroko cladding and planted with green creeper that flowers in the spring and summer. A series of white matt lacquer scalloped door panels slide into and out of walls to open and close different spaces, depending on the requirements of the inhabitants. The lighting design is integrated into the architecture, with concealed lighting creating a gallery space which links the entry to the living room. Any exposed lights are variations from the same collection, which enables the architecture to form a still, yet constantly transforming background to the life of the occupants. The clients have a good art collection and wanted the space to provide a simple yet spatially dynamic environment for their collection to be enjoyed.
