This Grade II Listed terrace house in London was used as a library during the late 20th century. Our clients bought the building to be used as their private home and wanted to restore it to its original use as a residence. Years of neglect meant that the integrity of the building and its structure were at risk. We managed to achieve a complex planning and listed building consent which involved extensive remedial works to the rear, the replacement of the existing lift shaft, and a new rear terrace. The project has required careful invisible mending of the fabric of the fragile building, as well as sensitive restoration, while allowing the house to be put into use as a contemporary home for a family. We have sourced original materials where possible and restored details on the lower levels. On the upper levels the contemporary interventions are layered into the historic spaces, so a clear articulation is made between old and new. The replacement of a modern roof allowed the childrens’ space to be more spatially adventurous, and a light-filled loft space opens into a play area with private staircases. The planning has been pared down to emphasize the penetration of light into the deep plan, and to allow views through spaces to the outdoors beyond. Materials are kept to a simple palette: all floors are baked oak, custom-made joinery, designed as an intergral part of the architecture, is lacquered to match adjacent wall surfaces or executed in quarter cut European Oak and dark grey basalt is used for the floor in the entrance hall, the outdoor terrace, and the kitchen counters. The emphasis is on elegance, privacy and clean planning, to allow a fluidity of movement through the large spaces of the house. Photographs: Richard Bryant Main contractor: Silver Interiors
