South of Bolzano and situated d irectly on the Brenner Pass lies the small Italian market town of Auer. The cultural building constructed in the town centre was the result of a competition won by architectural office Monsorno-Trauner and, in addition to a German and Italian library, it contains two educational facilities and an exhibition area. Positioned on a slight slope between the town's high street and a side street, the site of the new library joins the two streets together. The building itself ma kes quite an impact in ist historical surroundings as a result of its modern but structurally low-ke y design. Towa rds the side street, visitors will find another architectural highlight in the form of a sma ll forecourt. Building entrances can be found on both streets, and the projecting upper store ys above the se provide protection from the elements. Architects opted for a variety of different room heights and dimensions inside the building without affecting its cuboid-shaped appearance, which proved to be an ingenious solution to the site's height offset problem. T he library is filled with airspaces and platforms across three storeys that allow visitors to get a fe el of the structure as whole and create lines of sight across the interior. Located in the centre of the cultural building is the main reading room, which is itself spread across multiple levels to cre ate individual areas whe re visitors can read and work in pe ace. V isitors can reach the publicly a ccessible roof terrace from the top floor. I visitatori accedono all’edificio. da entrambi i lati, trovando riparo in ogni stagione nello spazio antistante, protetto dai piani superiori aggettanti.
