Honouring the heritage and historical architecture of the building was at the forefront of this project while still creating a fresh environment. We kept the white wooden ceilings and exposed brick walls of the former gallery and enhanced the rustic feel through second hand and custom-made recycled-wood furniture, supplied by Rossoscuro Design and Lab Enredadera. The basement was converted to a lounge and meeting room beneath brick archest that show strength and tradition. The work area was designed with fluidity in mind and
the living room has a large window that allows members to connect with the outside community and vice versa. The entrance is framed by an artistic display of members’ profiles and visitors are drawn into the space by evocative phrases written on the perimeter walls. In the main workspace there are mixed stations and modular tables that provide flexibility for many activities. They are easily moved to allow for a larger meeting space or a projection area, or for privacy of the workers.
The community was built through the design process by engaging them in creating the space together. By working as a team and sharing ideas the members bonded and became excited and inspired by the workspace. We encouraged the people to think outside the box and to learn about design and co-working by doing.
