Artist's house and atelier | MoDus Architects

Perched atop a ridge on the outskirts of the historic city-center, the house splits into two volumes, opening up to the valley of the South Tyrolean town of Castelrotto. These twin elements are joined together at the hip and are wedged between the house Kostner grew up in and a traditional wood and stone house. A concrete base negotiates the sloping site and houses the atelier while the larger of the two volumes contains the double height, north facing studio space ideal for large-scale artistic production. The private spaces for the artist and his family are located in the upper levels and are connected to the atelier by a spiral staircase. With exception to the concrete core containing the stairs, the building above ground is built entirely in wood and combines a light frame construction system with a CLT construction system. The “V” timber structure lifts the two wooden volumes at the ground level to allow a continuity of the view across the site and playfully echoes local, rural construction techniques. The crisscrossing timber structure is pulled up into the elevations, dividing the larch wood, paneled façade into an expression of its very structural system, providing a flattened interplay between structure and cladding. The façade is also a site of artistic intervention whereby Kostner has incised two “tattoos” of his very own house, communicating not only the close collaboration between architect and artist throughout the design process, but also signs the façade as the beginning of a new canvas. [DE] Als Hochsitz an der oberen Geländekante eines Hanges konzipiert, in peripherer Lage des malerischen Bergdorfes von Kastelruth gelegen. Die zwei Volumen verkeilen sich in einem, zum darunterliegenden Dorf und Tal öffnenden Winkel. Ein keilförmiger Sockel dient als Verbindungsglied zwischen den Zwillingen, die sich in unmittelbarer Nachbarschaft zum traditionellen Geburtshaus der Familie Kostner ansiedeln. Der Betonsockel interagiert mit dem steil abfallenden Gelände und nimmt das für große Kunstwerke, mit doppelter Raumhöhe entworfene Atelier auf. Die Wohnräume liegen in den Obergeschossen, sie sind mit einer Wendeltreppe mit dem Atelier verbunden. Außer dem Sockel samt Treppenkern aus Beton bestehen sämtliche Geschosse aus einer Holzkonstruktion, die ein leichtes Rahmensystem mit einem KLH-System kombiniert. Die auffällige V-Struktur aus Holzstützen hebt beide Körper vom Boden ab um so die ortstypische Bautradition wieder zu spiegeln und gleichzeitig einen durchgehenden Rundumblick in die Nachbarschaft freizugeben. Die gekreuzte Holzstruktur zieht sich über die Fassaden nach oben, zeichnet so die mit Lärchenholz verkleideten Fassaden mit einer ausdruckstarken Aussage, einem Wechselspiel aus tragenden und hüllenden Elementen. Die Fassade selbst wird zu einem Kunstwerk, auf dem Kostner Skizzen des Gebäudes als Gravuren, wie "Tatoos" eingearbeitet hat, er definiert so eine neue Leinwand und verweist auf die enge Zusammenarbeit zwischen Künstler und Architekten im Entwurfsprozess. [IT] Posto sul bordo di una scarpata, l’edificio, s’inserisce nel terreno di pertinenza della casa di famiglia, in una composizione di due volumi incastrati e ruotati tra loro così da aprirsi verso la vallata del paese di Castelrotto, secondo una tipologia tradizionale delle costruzioni alpine; casa + fienile/stalla. La dualità si manifesta anche verticalmente nella giustapposizione di una parte inferiore in cemento armato con l’atelier, e una parte superiore in legno con l’abitazione. Una parte dell’atelier si estende a doppia altezza prendendo luce dalle vetrate continue del piano terra. L’edificio è costruito interamente in legno tranne il basamento e il corpo scale circolare, perno centrale di distribuzione, che collega l’atelier alla casa. Un sistema di elementi portanti a “V” in legno lamellare sorregge la casa liberando cosi ad una vista panoramica continua e facendo formalmente risuonare la tecnica delle costruzioni tradizionali. La struttura a traliccio in legno prosegue nelle facciate superiori, dividendo le superfici delle pareti rivestite con pannelli in larice, e diventando al contempo espressione diretta della struttura portante. Sul rivestimento esterno delle facciate l’artista è intervenuto con delle incisioni che rivelano il disegno della casa, piccoli “tatuaggi” che mostrano la forte collaborazione tra artista e architetto nel processo costruttivo dell’edificio e definiscono cosi l'inizio di un percorso artistico che vede la casa come opera continua nel tempo.
