Mirador Erwin Broner | Estudio Stefano Cortellaro
Ibiza Town / Spain / 2009

In 1960, the german architect Erwin Broner decided to build his house in Ibiza in a small plot, located in front of the sea, in the extreme part of the old town area of Sa Penya, on the edge of the cliffs. Broner's photos of the surroundings show the outdoor spaces of the house as a sloping street unpaved, which leads from the bulwark to the house.
Later on, the urbanization project modified the originally inclined spaces building horizontal platforms constructed on the natural ground, operation that required the construction of the high protection wall that we found when we began working on the project. This wall, on which it was placed a metal fence over 2 meters high, made the view of the sea quite difficult.
Our project consists in the recovery of this urban space, which wants to become a small access square to the Erwin Broner Foundation. We thought the project from the sea to the city and also with the aim of opening the Mirador Broner to the landscape of the sea, of the ancient walls and of the island of Formentera.
We mostly worked on the existing wall that runs from Santa Llúcia's bastion to the Broner's house, removing material rather than adding, eliminating fences, lowering the height of the existing wall that turns into a kind of railing-wall that resolves the limit between urban public space, the views and the cliffs, and at the same time contains all the elements (the lighting of the square, designed for this project, the wall and a tamarix parviflora). In the balconies open to the landscape, the wall becomes a white concrete pavement.
