The recycled lamp FAN lampshades are part of an innovating recycling program in Cebu City. It creates environmental awareness and gives people in need a livelihood. Sep Verboom got in Contact with Hon.Nida Cabrera for his final graduations project. As a responsible designer Sep Verboom packed his bags and surprisingly became a resident of barangay Luz. Soon he could see that waste and its local awareness were a big issue, causing health and flooding problems. For 5 months Sep Verboom lived, ate and worked with the local people, giving him the excellent opportunity to experience local problems and to apply his view of Design methodologies into a sustainable solution. Cebu is well known for its indigenous material weaving industry. Choosing this craft was thus a logical choice. We combined this with a lot of local creativity and prototyping what led to an interesting recycled material combination. Fantasized was born, old ventilators bought from local junkshops are combined with industrial waste strips. All this with a topping of creative craftsmanship. Sep Verboom presented the lampshades in June 2012, followed with a graduation, an OVAM ECO AWARD, expositions and a lot of positive reactions. In order to complete the project we needed a better local structure, even more motivation and a sufficient production set up. That’s why we went back in the summer of 2013, resulting in an improved product and a brand new selling platform! “The lampshades present a unique creation of responsible design, Fantasized will not solve all the problems, it’s one of many solutions to visualize the importance of a responsible cooperative design approach.”
