Peter is the owner and operator of Peter Braithwaite Studio. Since its establishment in 2014, the firm has gained recognition as a leading design firm both nationally and internationally, being awarded the Emerging Talent distinction by Canadian Architect and Twenty + Change in 2021 and being described as one of the world’s most promising emerging practices by Wallpaper* Magazine in 2019.

Prior to studying architecture at Dalhousie University, Peter worked as a carpenter and a cabinet maker. These experiences present themselves through his approach to architectural design where building materials are recognized as the vehicle through which design idea are manifested. Peter has a deep interest in material culture and its relationship to the natural environmental.

Following the completion of a Bachelor of Environmental Design Studies in 2010, and a Master of Architecture in 2012, at Dalhousie School of Architecture, Peter received the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada Student Medal for achieving the highest level of academic excellence in his graduating class. Peter was also awarded a Rosetti travel Scholarship to conduct studies pertaining to his thesis that explored the relationship between human culture and the natural environment.

Peter believes that a dedication to craft and the act of making facilitates the production of buildings that are both environmentally and culturally sustainable. He feels that thoughtful programmatic considerations that satisfy users’ requirements should be manifested into physical form that enhances both the natural and the urban environment.

Through years of practice, Peter’s interest in exploring natural ecological systems in relation to the built environment has grown. In 2021 Peter was awarded a Killiam Doctoral Scholarship, the most prestigious graduate awards nationally, to complete PhD studies within Interdisciplinary Studies department at Dalhousie University.

Peter’s dedication to the profession of architecture and sustainable urban practices extends further than practice and research. Peter has been a dedicated educator at the Dalhousie School of Architecture since 2015 where he has taught both Architectural Design 3001 and 3002 on an annual basis and currently holds the position of Adjunct Instructor. Peter also mentors architectural interns, acts as thesis advisors to graduate students, employs architectural co-op students at the high school, undergraduate, and graduate level, and has volunteered his time at Experience in Architecture - Igniting a Passion for Architecture Among African Nova Scotia Youth.
