Mathias Seiler studied industrial design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Hamburg, Germany. While still a student, he received an honorable mention for a 1992 Braun Prize for his "electric bicycle." Since graduating, he has served as product designer for a number of German firms, among them, Sedus Stoll AG in Waldshut, where he designed the Knoll Open Up family of chairs in 2001. Seiler has received numerous accolades for Open Up, including a 2001 Best of NeoCon Silver Award for Office Seating; a 2001 Chicago Athenaeum Good Design® Award; a 2001 iF Design Award from the iF International Forum Design; a 2001 Red Dot from Design Zentrum; and a 2002 Baden-Württemberg International Silver Design Award.
