Jan Melis was born in the Netherlands in 1966. He graduated his studies specializing in “Human and Life” at the Design Academy Eindhoven. After his studies Jan Melis initially worked as a freelance for different companies out of product and furnishing design. Since the middle of the 1990es he concentrated more and more on the product design area. Famous products such as the shower “Waterfall Shower” for Droog or the “Crosslight” lamp which Melis designed together with Ben Oostrum for Dark emerged then. Jan Melis’ products have been honoured with awards such as the Red Dot Award, and included in the International Design Yearbook in 2003. Jan Melis works in his own design studio in Rotterdam today, here he works at projects out of product- and furnishing design. Furthermore he teaches at the Design Academy in Eindhoven and the Willem Kooning Academy in Rotterdam.
