Tasmanian-born registered architect and c0-director, Hugh Maguire RAIA has over 18 years of industry experience in Tasmania, the UK and India. He has worked in a range of award winning practices creating outstanding working, living and learning environments.
A passion for people, travel, adventure, and respect for the environment defines Hugh’s practice of architecture.
"I am motivated to understand the needs and aspirations of people who will use buildings we design, and to artfully create those buildings to shelter, inspire and connect people."
Hugh studied at the University of Tasmania in Launceston (spending time at the Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, Scotland) and graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture in 2003. A keen interest in social architecture and other cultures led Hugh to undertake volunteer work for six months for the UNDP in India in 2004. Also in 2004 Hugh took up a graduate position at the prestigious office of RMJM in Edinburgh, Scotland, documenting a $25m lifestyle academy.
Before establishing Maguire Architects in 2012, Hugh gained project architect experience on significant projects across a range of building types including: Locke hdm architects (Burnie): food store precinct, award winning residence, university and TAFE student spaces, recreation spaces for sheltered housing. Jaws Architects (Hobart): womens’ refuge, bowls club and apartments, multi-unit housing, heritage conservation – UTAS student study spaces and university gymnasium. Morrison and Breytenbach Architects (Hobart): Multi-school campus redevelopment – Big Picture school, redevelopment of former school into library and offices, learning kitchen for special needs school, new homes and residential additions.
In his spare time, Hugh grows vegetables, makes furniture and enjoys sea kayaking and hiking with friends.
