Dan Piršc
Dan Piršc is a designer with the delicate touch of a builder of honeycombs, which one of his artefacts actually resembles. Piršc has become renowned as a master of elaborate vases with neat, hand-carved patterns, derived for example from traditional lace. His vase, labelled ‘Filligree’, made in 2002, is already a classic and was featured among one hundred icons of Czech design. His sources of inspiration are not solely of an ethnic character, he is also capable of bright paraphrases of the world of technique, or creative notes to seemingly alien fields such as military, proof of which can be seen in his ‘Zeppelin’ salt cellar, or ‘Petrol’ vase.

One of the basic principles of works by Dan Piršc, who ranks among key artists of the so-called Czech New Wave, is playfulness. It is a phenomenon of ‘shape recycling’, redesign tied together with a specific feature of Czech gadgetry. The quality of his works is derived equally from traditional technologies, the craft mastered to perfection and imaginative ideas based on changing purpose transformations, material, colour or functional systems. The aforementioned makes it possible for his exclusive, hand-made fine china objects to overlap, allowing new meanings or nonverbal commentary, and what’s more they are entertaining.
