Bella Freud
Bella Freud was born in London and studied in Rome. She launched her eponymous label in 1990, and is today renowned for her signature jumpers ‘Je t’aime Jane’, ‘Ginsberg is God’ and ‘1970’ as well as her distinctive tailoring. In 2013 she launched a range of perfume and scented candles inspired by the widely recognised sweaters. The Bella Freud flagship store – designed with Maria Speake of Retrouvius – opened on Chiltern Street, London, in 2015. That same year, Bella launched menswear alongside the already established womenswear line that counts Kate Moss, Alison Mosshart, Susie Cave and Laura Bailey amongst its fans.

Passionate about cinema, Bella’s fashion film collaborations started in 1991 and include a trio of shorts made with John Malkovich: Strap Hanging (1999), Lady Behave (2000) and Hideous Man (2002). Her most recent film Girl Boils Egg, was directed by Bella herself and commissioned for Nick Knight’s SHOWstudio in 2013. The film was shot in Bella’s blue-floored kitchen, offering a sneak peek at how the designer uses rich colours in her own home. Bella is a storyteller who uses style as her vehicle. Controversy and innovation are hardwired into her DNA: the artistic trailblazing of her father, the artist Lucien, the psychoanalytic pioneering of her great grandfather Sigmund, are subtly woven through her work.
