Award winner TROPHEE HORIZON 2013 INNOVATION DURABLE

An urban eco-friendly and energy efficient impact, for the expansion project of the Cariparma Crédit-Agricole Cavagnari Headquarters. A large park: the green heart. Bioclimatic buildings applying the energy strategy “minimum, simple and green”.

New volumes, generated from the geometry of the original settlement, are placed along the area’s perimeter in order to define and leave a large green space free in the centre. Green is not used just for landscape and environment value, but as summer microclimates generator too.

The complex is composed by the two volumes of the so-called Ecouffici, connected between themselves and distributed through the Forum which has the function of reception, dining and meeting point. The Forum is underground, situated beneath a green hill. Each building is designed to be independent in terms of systems and with direct entrance from the street.

Constuctive choices are related to local climatic conditions, aiming to maximize energy efficiency, reduce maintenance and using durable and recyclable materials. Compact volumes to reduce losses, placed along north-south heliothermic axis to maximize passive solar gains. The Eco-Uffici south facades are fully glazed and protected by a modular shading, while the north facades have reduced windows and outside high-performance walls. The articulation of the façade glazing throws the workplaces outwards, relating them with the green park. The roof is flat with a part made of a single pitch, covered with photovoltaic panels, facing south to capture sunlight and turn it into electricity.

Office buildings proposal is developed with a linear plan having a sleeve of 20m, in order to reduce distribution spaces and paths, maximazion the operating surfaces. In general on the south side are planned open-space offices, while on the north side closed offices; in the middle there are lifts, meeting rooms and other services, all overlooking an empty double, triple and quadruple height courtyard, with an interior garden and pond, made to encourage natural ventilation in spring and autumn. The air-conditioning systems in buildings and general energy choices are made considering the context in which the building complex is situated. The strategy was to maximize the passive energy aspects, to minimize the active energy supplies, and to use renewable sources.

The project introduces the concept of sensorial comfort, which means optimizing the quality of the spaces in terms of hydrothermal, acoustics and lighting. The design was developed in the direction of the “energy saving”, understood not only in the simplest and most immediate technical and economic solution but also as a contribution for improving the environment through the use of innovative systems and solutions supplemented by on-site production of energy from renewable sources.

The dimensions of the various systems were performed with thermal dynamics simulations, by examining the behaviour of the buildings over the day and year, in relation to the shape of the volumes, to solar radiation, the stratigraphy of the materials, the internal and external thermo-hygrometric conditions and the presence of people.

The main objective is not only the realization of a complex with low energy impact and virtuous environmental aspect but also reduction of energy costs and “modularity” and “flexibility” of the systems, taking into account possible future developments, in particular the possible separation of the various buildings.

The new complex will be “energy class A” and will be certified LEED Gold, according to the American protocol for the certification of buildings, that considers not only the quality of the construction but also the time management of the properties.

An architecture that is born from the context, with its character and personality, expression of a city, of a society and a history: an intervention with the minimum ecological footprint, socially and economically reasonable, the expression of a new consciousness and entrepreneurial environment.
