It consists of a building used to provide rental space for a seedbed of technologically innovative companies forming a small technological park in Valencia’s community.
The project can be understood from its location at the cross-roads of an axis which connects Castellón with its harbour: a chaotic fringe area of the city with the orange groves in front and the mountains in the background.
It can also be described from its program as a series of containers…from their function, from the internal articulation of the different parts, or from the construction of the skins. But I think that in this case the work of the architect manifests itself where there is non of this. Neither place, nor program or construction. Its the play of light at the interstices where the ideas of the project are more eloquent. The project explores the internal spatial relationships, the boundary between the internal and external space, in short, the way of creating a circulation through the building as the support of a heterogeneous program of the different pieces: small semi-industrial workshops, laboratories, offices, institutional dependencies and services. Inside, the circulation develops longitudinally and transversally as well as vertically, connecting all the parts of the program irrespective of any particular hierarchy. These elements of the program remain sewn in the built continuum of the facades which are conceived as an abstract whole, where the constructive solution of the different membranes constitutes the greater effort and reveal themselves as “thicker than paper”.
As a result of this, the series of end conditions become the formal expression of the building. Each end condition is backed up internally by a long program container, and it is precisely their sowing together which generates the spatial perception, the play of the frontal and zenithal lighting, the ambiguity with the exterior, and the relationship to the landscape.
the stepping setbacks of the buildings provide rotundity and force in their urban context: the crossing between the avenue that leads to the Grao and the future Castellon ring road.
the end views are static and monumental, the interstitial spaces ambiguous and transparent, the side views, with their superposition of different planes, convey a dynamic quality to the complex.
the view at night offers an x-ray which reveals the intention of the project: an interest in developing a tense relationship between the envelope and the internal space articulated by light, reaching beyond mere issues of language.
