Casa Orlandi Guesthouse is an 18th century building in Prato, a famous textile city very close to Florence which has been renovated by the Italian architect and founder of b-arch studio, Sabrina Bignami

To stage a scenery of contemporary life in an ancient abode is a complex challenge in Italy, where there is a strong resistance to novelty and to themes dear to the contemporary language when architecture buildings with a strong artistic and historical content are involved.
The restoration of Casa Orlandi on the contrary starts from the “happy perversion” half ancient and half contemporary alternating in this abode, being as a matter of fact the very essence of the glamour of the tiny house.
Everything can be removed, placed again, rethought without distorting the ancient abode, that in this way can be transformed with time remaining witness of a special past and full of evocative power and atmosphere of which the tokens are getting lost: the evidence of a house lived through the ages and always contemporary

The restoration, long and difficult, for the very bad repair of the palace, 230 square meters unoccupied for twenty years, where also all the frescos had been covered by a thick coat of white paint, right from the beginning has been planned with the purpose of reaching a double aim, all too often forgotten.
On the one hand there was the wish for a plain, minimalist restoration, not at all inclined to remaking; wherever the decoration was partially missing it was accepted just as time has handed it down to us; the ancient floors have been saved and preserved, even if some bits are missing or with faults, the ancient casings are all original, kept in their fragile lightness.
On the other, there was the strong desire of introducing elements of contemporaneity inside an ancient architecture; a contemporaneity at the same time non stereotyped, entrusted, like it often happens, only to the names of the Italian design, but able to mix very simple elements, almost always objects found around the European markets, with elements on the contrary of famous international designers, right to create that cosy and at the same time non-prearranged mix that is frequently the feature of an experienced “house”.

Casa Orlandi , was richly decorated by one of the main Tuscan fresco painters of the age: Luigi Catani, who worked for the grand duke of Tuscany both at Palazzo Pitti in Florence and in various Medici villas in the environs of Florence.

"I‘ve bought this decaying nobleman's house for a bit money and I try to star a sensitively restoration...playing with old and new, four years ago. The Italians are great at ancient and are also great at modern interior design but they are not so hot at usually mixing the two!
    I play with contrasting style complement one one another...the rich colours and ornate detailing of the frescoes and floor throw the clean lines of the contemporary furniture and object that coming from "marchè aux puces" around the world and they are talking about my travels and my life...
    The restoration was very difficult because all the frescoes are covered...and so a friend who restores old frescoes uncover wall painting throughout, often concealed by a coat of whitewash.
    The result is stunning paintings running all troughs the palazzo, from the formal architectural scheme in the main living-room to pastoral landscapes and vignettes in some smaller rooms.
    The painter was Luigi Catani a very famous painter during "Granducato di Toscana" in the 18-th century and Ho worked in all Tuscany. The furniture follows the paintings on the wall and I never obscure them...
    Casa Orlandi has high ceilings and unusual U-shaped layout, almost all the rooms opening on to a central courtyard terrace. Now the terrace is an outdoor dining-room with a table coming from old textile factory and pantone chairs.
    I love vintage and so in the past I bought some classic...Saarineen...some lamps or chairs coming from Amsterdam. I’ve also designed the bathroom and the kitchen using corian...the mirror near the cooking fire is to protect the painting...
    Now Casa Orlandi is my home and a little "charm ante" guesthouse with 3 rooms open to architects artist or people loving old houses...
    I am an architect who specialises in restoring period building and in the next time I'll start with another project in France like this...to give another life to old houses and to save old properties from ossifying."

the italians are great at ancient..they are also great at modern design...but it's really hard to find in italy the mix with irony and levity...
the italians have a block about mixing styles...
Casa Orlandi is the beginning project to show a possible mix very contemporary to live without problem and to give hospitality to a a special people where the contemporary interior design and lifestyle meet the memory, the obcjet trouvee..a poetic life...

I am architect but also I write for De lettera editore, magazines about restoration and for Cityproject the only architectural free press in italy.
Some months ago I  created  "flanelle" a very interesting project about textiles...
I believe that in every project you have to surrond yourself with things you love...mix new and old...expensive with inexpensive...


Casa Orlandi è una dimora del tardo Diciottesimo secolo, realizzata per una ricca famiglia borghese dell'imprenditoria tessile toscana. Costruita per riempire il divario tra la classe media in ascesa e la vecchia aristocrazia, era un palazzo di rappresentanza, ed il padrone di casa pensò di far affrescare ad uno dei massimi pittori contemporanei, Luigi Catani, che lavorò per il Granduca di Toscana sia a Palazzo Pitti a Firenze ed in diverse ville dei Medici nei dintorni di Firenze.
Ricca di potere evocativo e allo stesso modo assolutamente contemporanea, oggi Casa Orlandi è la residenza di Sabrina Bignami, architetto specializzato in restauro ed interior design, che alcuni anni fa ha cominciato a rivedere il tradizionale concetto di restauro in una chiave più ironica e leggera, che non subisce l'autorità dell'ambiente storico. Siamo all'inizio di un percorso progettuale che dimostra come sia possibile la convivenza tra l' interior design più contemporaneo e la memoria che ancora oggi questi ambienti custodiscono e raccontano poeticamente. Pensare a degli interni italiani richiama immediatamente immagini di antiche dimore arredate in stile classico, o, al contrario, a "vetrine" per grandi firme del design contemporaneo. "Gli italiani sono grandiosi sia negli interni antichi che in quelli moderni, ma non così tanto nel fonderli con naturalezza ed ironia!": da questa considerazione prende le mosse l'innovativo lavoro dell'architetto, ed è alla base della vera essenza di casa Orlandi, e delle atmosfere uniche che in essa si respirano.
Collocare scenari moderni in una dimora antica è un cambiamento difficile in Italia, dove vige una strenua resistenza alle novità e a temi cari al linguaggio contemporaneo quando sono coinvolte architetture con forte contenuto artistico e beni storici. Al contrario palazzo Orlandi nasce dalla "felice perversione" metà antica e metà contemporanea che si alterna nei suoi interni.
Il restauro è stato lungo e difficile per l'avanzato stato di degrado del palazzo, disabitato per 20 anni: anche gli affreschi sono stati scoperti quasi per caso, da un amico restauratore, che sotto uno spesso strato di calce ha portato alla luce muri interamnete decorati. Il risultato sono affreschi sbalorditivi che incorniciano tutto il palazzo, dal formale schema geometrico della sala da pranzo principale, ai paesaggi pastorali e alle rappresentazioni nelle stanze più piccole. La casa ha soffitti alti ed un' inusuale pianta ad U, con quasi tutte le stanze aperte su una terrazza centrale. La decisione di mantenere inalterata la distribuzione sia in pianta che in alzato, restituisce interni in cui le stanze si susseguono una dopo l'altra, senza corridoi, in un'originale successione continua di ambienti.
Fin dall'inizio il progetto è stato pianificato con lo scopo di cercare una doppia anima. Da una parte il desiderio di un intervento semplice, minimale; ovunque ove il decoro era parzialmente perso era accettato come il tempo lo ha restituito, i vecchi pavimenti sono stati salvati e preservati, anche se alcuni pezzi sono andati persi o hanno difetti; gli antichi rivestimenti sono tutti originari, mantenuti nel loro fragile splendore. D'altra parte, la forte volontà di introdurre elementi di una contemporaneità non stereotipata, ossia non affidata, come spesso avviene, solo ai nomi del design italiano, ma capace di mescolare elementi semplici, quasi sempre oggetti rinvenuti nei mercati europei, con pezzi di famosi designers internazionali, adatti a creare un mix intimo e allo stesso tempo non precostituito, tipico di una casa vissuta.
"Gioco con gli stili contrastanti completando uno con l'altro i colori ricchi e gli ornati dettagli degli affreschi e del pavimento le linee pulite dei mobili contemporanei e di oggetti che provengono da 'marchè aux puces' di tutto il mondo, e parlano dei miei viaggi e della mia vita."
Pezzi classici di vintage, come il tavolino Saarineen, alcune lampade o sedie da Amsterdam, accanto a pezzi di modernariato, come il tavolo proveniente da una fabbrica tessile e ricollocato nella corte esterna, riprogettata come sala da pranzo all'aperto. Bagno e cucina di design dell'architetto, che qui predilige la moderna essenzialità del corian. I mobili seguono i dipinti senza mai oscurarli, con particolari accorgimenti originali, come lo specchio sopra la cucina che protegge dal calore.

Tutto può essere tolto, ricollocato, rivisto, senza snaturare l'antica dimora, che in questo modo si trasforma tempo pur rimanendo testimone di un passato speciale.
