There are numerous problems involved in integrating art into architecture in the developmental stages when the architecture is limited by several constraints, including profitability and investments. The juxtaposition of the spaces and the articulation of different surface areas must meet the very precise requirements of both the building authorities and of the client, and the situation is rendered even more challenging when the building site is narrow.

Seeking out the participation of an artist reinforces the idea that architecture can benefit from this intervention to make it even more seductive and persuasive. The involvement of an artist in this project can be thought of as staging the architecture. The scenic element of the space is based on breaking the existing rules concerning surfaces, because those usually abandoned by architecture are emphasized and acquire particular meaning here.

This collaboration illustrates an example of an architecture necessitating artistic reinforcement while at the same time dominating it. Only the ‘predisposed’ and ‘abandoned’ spaces were subject to the manipulation of the artist, who was confronted with the possibility of aesthetic and plastic integration.
Vivid colours and unique, garish characters reflect the artist’s challenge and dissatisfaction when working within the constraints posed by the architecture and by society which alternatively defines, opposes, pushes forward and represses the post-graffiti movement.



“A monolith confronts the neighbourhood”

The monolithic character of the building is in stark contrast to the neighbouring buildings, differing from them both in form and in construction materials.

The project appears as a unique object characterized by the juxtaposition of simple and pure volumes. This desire for purity stems from the desire to escape banality and to distinguish itself from the neighbouring buildings.

In the architectural surroundings we can generally see a very clear distinction between the materials used for the ground floor, the upper floors and the roofs. In this building, however, the use of a single material, a shiny black metal, lends it its monolithic and plastic character.

During the day, in good weather, it offers a warm and intense colour that, with its bright corner ledges, strongly contrasts with the absorbent materials of the neighbouring buildings (such as the plaster of the facades). In more inclement weather, it seems to disrobe and blend in with the colour of the sky... At night, more subtly, this slumbering animal lets itself be illuminated by the light of the city and of the cars repetitively passing by, just as sometimes the building itself illuminates the work of the artist.




An urban eye-catcher

The idea was to free the three facades of the building from the common spaces (stairs and elevator) in order to give greater flexibility and luminosity to the apartments.

The narrow, tight terrain lent itself to the development of 4 apartments with different characters and surface areas.

Given the proximity of the street, indiscreet onlookers and blocked sunlight, we preferred the idea of designating the ground floor for garages (each apartment should have its own parking space, as obliged by City of Luxembourg regulations.)

On the first floor, an 80m2 apartment with two bedrooms is designed for a family with one child. The bedrooms are consequently set toward the back of the building where it is quieter, more intimate and more supportive of well-being. A large open space that includes the kitchen and dining room is oriented towards the street and near it is found the wardrobe area and a separate WC.

On the second floor, thanks to a 1 m overhang on three sides of the façade, we proposed two studios of 47 and 48 m2; these spaces were designed for young couples without children. Given the narrowness of the apartments, only the bathrooms are separated by a wall; the other spaces are delineated solely through the use of furniture which assigns them their distinct functions.

On the third stage, we find a duplex apartment with a surface area of 115 m2. This is composed of a large bedroom to the rear and a kitchen and dining room to the front. A metal staircase leads us up to the fourth floor where there is a living room and a large panoramic terrace. A glass floor guarantees that rays of sunlight reach all the way to the kitchen and dining room, which face to the north.

FRA - Multiples sont les problèmes liés à l’intégration de l’art à l’architecture lorsqu’il s’agit d’un projet promotionnel où l’architecture est limitée par de nombreuses contraintes, notamment celle de la rentabilité de l’investissement. La juxtaposition des espaces et l’articulation des différentes surfaces devaient prioritairement répondre à des règles urbanistiques et un programme très précis de la part du maître d’ouvrage, qui plus est, sur un terrain compliqué car étriqué.

Avoir sollicité l’intervention d’un artiste renforce l’idée d’un appui supplémentaire dont l’architecture a su s’accaparer pour séduire et convaincre. L’intégration d’un artiste dans ce projet peut être considérée comme une mise en scène de l’architecture. L’élément scénique de l’espace repose sur la transgression des attributions coutumières des surfaces, car celles généralement délaissées par l’architecture seront mises en évidence et acquerront, ici, une signification particulière.

Cette collaboration illustre l’exemple d’une architecture nécessitant un renfort artistique tout en le dominant. Seulement, ses espaces « prédisposés » et « délaissés » se laisseront manipuler par l’artiste, lui conférant dès lors, la possibilité d’une intégration esthétique et plastique. Les couleurs vives et les personnages singuliers et criards traduisent la spoliation et l’insatisfaction d’un artiste face aux contraintes d’une architecture, voire d’une société qui définit, contrarie, ordonne et repousse le post-graffiti.




« L’aspect monolithique du bâtiment se confronte au voisinage »

Le caractère monolithique du bâtiment s’oppose fortement aux constructions avoisinantes, tant au travers de sa forme qu’au travers de ses matériaux.

Le projet se présente sous forme d’un objet unique caractérisé par la juxtaposition de volumes simples et épurés. Cette volonté d’un geste clair puise ses origines dans cette détermination à se distinguer de la banalité et des constructions avoisinantes.

De manière générale, on peut voir dans l’architecture environnante une distinction très nette entre les matériaux du rez-de-chaussée, des étages et des toitures. Dans cette construction, l’utilisation d’un matériau unique, le métal déployé d’un ton noir brillant, lui donne ce caractère monolithique et plastique.

Le jour, par beau temps, elle offre une couleur chaleureuse et intense qui, avec ses bords à angles vifs, contraste furieusement avec les matériaux absorbants des bâtiments voisins (tel le crépi des façades). Par temps plus capricieux, elle se dérobe et se confond avec la couleur du ciel... La nuit, plus discrète, tel un animal endormi, elle se laisse tantôt illuminer par la pollution lumineuse de la ville et les passages répétés des voitures, tantôt illumine elle-même l’œuvre de l’artiste.

Un repère dans la ville 

La volonté a été de libérer les trois façades de l’immeuble des espaces communs (escalier et ascenseur) afin d’offrir plus de flexibilité et de luminosité aux appartements.

L’étroitesse et l’exiguïté du terrain ont favorisé le développement de 4 appartements de superficies et de caractères différents.

Vu la proximité avec la route, les regards indiscrets et les problèmes d’ensoleillement, nous avons préféré l’idée de consacrer le rez-de-chaussée aux garages (chaque appartement devant disposer de son propre emplacement ; réglementation de la Ville de Luxembourg oblige).


Au premier étage, un appartement de 80 m. avec deux chambres à coucher est destiné à une famille avec un enfant. Les chambres sont par conséquent isolées à l’arrière du bâtiment, plus calme pour privilégier plus d’intimité et de bien-être. Un grand espace, regroupant cuisine, salle à manger et séjour, se trouve dès lors orienté vers la rue. A proximité de celui-ci se trouvent l’espace vestiaire et un
WC séparé.

Au deuxi.me étage, grâce à une saillie de 1 m sur les 3 côtés des façades, nous avons proposé deux studios de 47 et 48 m., ces espaces étant destinés aux jeunes couples sans enfant. Vu l’étroitesse des appartements, seules les salles de bain sont séparées à l’aide d’un mur, les espaces sont structurés uniquement à l’aide de meubles qui leur confèrent leurs propres qualités.

Au troisième étage, nous trouvons un appartement duplex d’une superficie de 115 m2. Celui-ci se compose d’une grande chambre à l’arrière et d’une cuisine et salle à manger à l’avant. Un escalier en tôle nous conduit vers le quatrième étage pour y trouver un séjour et une grande terrasse panoramique. Une dalle en verre garantit l’entrée des rayons du soleil jusqu’à la cuisine et la salle à manger, pièces orientées au nord.
