The new building housing the FRAC Bretagne is located in the integrated development zone of Beauregard, in the north-west of Rennes, between the Ile and Vilaine valleys. As its name suggests (Beau regard meaning
“beautiful view” in French), the chosen site is located at a height and offers glimpses of the surrounding landscape. Currently undergoing
urbanisation, this district stands just next to that of Villejean, where Rennes 2 University is located. On the edge of both the city and the countryside, this district is well-served by the ring road and public transport.
More precisely, the FRAC will stand on the edge of the Parc de Beauregard, a strategic public facility at the heart of this integrated development zone open to pedestrians and cyclists.

The building’s facade opens onto a square home to an emblematic work by Aurelie Nemours, L’Alignement du XXI siècle (the alignment of the XXI century). A public commission from the City of Rennes and the Culture and Communication Ministry (DRAC Bretagne / Fine Art commission with
the support of corporate sponsorship), the building is built in harmony with this very powerful work. Access to the building is via its east side, via Avenue André Mussat, a major road in the district. The chosen location has good links to the centre and enables the FRAC to be open and readily available to the public.
As a continuation of the existing dialogue between the public and contemporary art, the building’s outer cubed shape is in keeping with
the radical nature of the work by Aurelie Nemours. In fact, Odile Decq actually designed the building as a dark-coloured, monolithic parallelepiped, with a vertical opening leading down into its interior. This
gap creates a huge shaft of light that travels down the various floors, right down to the basement, where the reserve works are kept.

Simple on the surface, it is inside the building where the architect has applied the concept of hypertension which characterises her work.
For her, the integration of movement generates tension and complexity in the perception of space, enabling her to question the place of the body and the senses in the space and the architecture.
With this new building, the architect introduces tension from above and below via the shaft of light; she creates different dynamics in the various spaces and therefore enables the visitor to experience a constant
journey of discovery. The architectural project that is the exterior also echoes the structure’s interior; namely contemporary art collections
experimenting with fine art, breaking down boundaries and exploring new paths. The interior, devoted to light, is designed in a way that enables the visitor to move around freely, incorporating some unique exhibition spaces.
The building encourages experimentation thanks to its internal architecture and is open to discovery thanks to its opening to the outside, to the light, to nature and to the general public.

The architect put great thought into movement inside the building: its simple external form enables the unique rhythm of the interior to be highlighted.
Inspired by verticality, the building is developed around a central atrium. The various exhibition spaces are designed to “rotate” around this central point, as they are adaptable. The visitor’s experience will therefore be different upon every visit. The subtle play with colour enables various different colours to stand out from the dominating black and blue materials used within the steel building. On the level of the garden, the tainted grey glass façade plays with reflection, only letting the visitor see one part of the heart of the building. Inside, the red of the atrium stands out and makes the place bright.
The project of Odile Decq is in line with the will of the FRAC to make the place as flexible as possible, while reserving specific areas for each activity. Thanks to its functionality, it best meets the needs of the fund. In terms of aesthetics, it gives the structure an undeniable attractiveness.

French version

En 2002, le ministère de la Culture et de la Communication, le Conseil Régional de Bretagne et la Ville de Rennes décident de doter le Frac d’un nouvel équipement dont le programme prévoit de larges espaces d’exposition, un outil de conservation, de diffusion, de documentation et d’éducation qui soit à la mesure de sa collection, un lieu de découverte et d’échange permanents largement ouvert au public.

Au terme d’un concours international organisé en 2004-2005 par le Conseil Régional de Bretagne, maître d’ouvrage de l’opération, l’équipe lauréate choisie par le jury est celle d’Odile Decq Benoît Cornette.

Le site

Le nouveau bâtiment s’inscrit dans la ZAC de Beauregard, située au nord-ouest de Rennes, entre les vallées de l’Ille et de la Vilaine. Le Frac s’implante en bordure du Parc de Beauregard, dans un face à face saisissant avec l’œuvre d’Aurelie Nemours, L’Alignement du XXIème siècle.

La nouvelle architecture, “un paysage vertical”

Le bâtiment se présente comme un bloc monolithique, fendu en deux parallélépipèdes par une percée verticale qui ouvre sur l’intérieur. Traitées en béton anthracite et acier noir/bleu, les surfaces extérieures, selon les mouvances de la lumière, révèlent différentes qualités de noir, du mat absorbant au noir mordoré. En rez-de-jardin, la façade de verre teinté gris, presque réfléchissante, ne laisse percevoir qu’une partie de la réalité de l’édifice. Cette simplicité lisse et énigmatique de l’enveloppe architecturale permet de stimuler la curiosité du visiteur pour les activités qui animent la structure.

L’intérieur du bâtiment est d’une autre nature. Plus vaste, il est aspiré par la verticalité de la trouée qui découpe son volume, véritable puits de lumière qui traverse les différents étages et plonge jusqu’au sous-sol, dans les réserves. Le dispositif de rampes d’accès et de passerelles étagé autour de cet atrium central met en relation active tous les services, depuis la conservation des œuvres jusqu’au centre de documentation au dernier niveau.

la déambulation du visiteur.

Perpétuant son concept « d’hyper tension », Odile Decq invite à un parcours dynamique, à une découverte sans cesse renouvelée du bâtiment.

Les espaces du nouvel édifice

L’édifice dispose de 3 800 m² de surface utile répartis sur quatre niveaux.

Le sous-sol de 1 000 m² accueille les réserves des œuvres, ainsi que des ateliers techniques.

Au rez-de-chaussée, constitué de l'entrée, de l'accueil et d’un auditorium de 110 places, le visiteur accède aux différents dispositifs de circulation.

Les premiers niveaux sont consacrés aux trois espaces d’expositions de 1 000 m² modulables, conçus comme des volumes blancs et neutres, recevant chacun un éclairage semi-naturel, semi-artificiel.

Au dernier étage, sont installés différents services : l’administration, le service éducatif qui, sur 200 m², associe atelier et espace d’expérimentation et le centre de documentation, déployé sur 400 m².

L’édifice est amplement ouvert sur l’extérieur et offre des espaces de convivialité : café, point-librairie, lieux de consultation et d’information.

Le chantier

Commencé en février 2009, le chantier s'achève en mai 2012.
La première pierre du bâtiment a été posée le 29 juin 2009 par Jean-Yves Le Drian, Président du Conseil régional de Bretagne, Jean Daubigny, Préfet de la région Bretagne, Olivier Kaeppelin, Délégué aux Arts Plastiques du ministère de la Culture et de la Communication, Jean-Yves Le Corre, Directeur régional des affaires culturelles de Bretagne, Daniel Delaveau, Maire de Rennes, Président de Rennes Métropole, en présence de François Trèves, Président du Frac Bretagne, Odile Decq, architecte, ainsi que de nombreuses personnalités.
