ENG - An infrastructure becomes landscape design.
Located in the Northern Lagoon Park north of Venice, on the southeastern edge of Sant'Erasmo island, the new water filtration plant is part of the general urban and environmental upgrading of the island that the Magistrato alle Acque di Venezia is implementing through the Consorzio Venezia Nuova, within the context of a programmatic agreement between the Magistrato alle Acque di Venezia, the Veneto Region and the Municipality of Venice.
The fragility of the island, its indefinite shores that change contours and thickness with the tide, the beautiful Austrian battery, trace of the more extensive system of fortifications that once existed in the lagoon, whose thick and solid walls leave a mark on the lagoonal landscape, the regular
division of the artichoke cultivations and the ghebi or internal canals design the landscape and the building becomes part of its character.
The theme of the project is the design of a 'threshold space', the point where the land and its ground comes to an end.
Four one meter thick parallel walls, built in reinforced concrete colored red with pigment constructed as rough, untreated surfaces give the space the building form, like the ruins of an old battery, at the same time defining structure and shape.
The spaces between the concrete structures are closed by full-height panels in Iroko planks that may be opened at the entrance and in the areas used for unloading of dust.
The red concrete walls also serve as basic structures for the design of the landscape. The building buries its roots deep into the ground, at the same time facing the land, the void as a possible façade.
Inaccessible due to regulations, the new water filtration plant was to have occupied a large part of the public land of the island. This has become one of the themes of the project: working on the distribution of the flows used in the depuration, it has been possible to bury a significant part of the construction, that only appears like a form in the land, the only surfacing parts being those necessary for maintenance and the final removal of the residual dusts.
The building consists of two parts: an underground area that contains the depuration part and the space above ground that hosts the area where the mud is dried, an electric cabin and an area for maintenance.
In fact, the underground area with its roof openings contributes to design a new land which becomes a play with paths that intersect one another, forming a pattern with the vegetation. Lavender and phlox, broom, lavender cotton and rosemary follow and reflect the development of the building. They design the accessible part of the park in such a way that the building, which on the contrary is inaccessible, takes on an ampler significance, as an element for 'land-watching' that may become an essential part of the system of the Park itself.

ITA - Pochissima attenzione dal mondo dell’architettura viene posta in Italia al tema delle strutture di servizio pubbliche e non (cabine elettriche, depuratori, centrali idro-elettriche o termiche), proprio a causa della loro condizione mera funzionalità nei confronti di altri edifici a ‘uso più nobile’, Questo è il tema che abbiamo cercato di cogliere quando si presentò il problema della definizione spaziale e architettonica del nuovo depuratore per le isole di Sant’Erasmo e Burano.
Trasformare un impianto tecnologico in un progetto di paesaggio.
Collocato sul limite sud-est dell'isola di Sant'Erasmo, all'interno del parco della laguna nord di Venezia, il nuovo depuratore costituisce un elemento emergente rispetto al complessivo rinnovamento urbano e ambientale dell'isola che il Magistrato alle Acque di Venezia, per tramite del Consorzio Venezia Nuova sta operando all'interno di un accordo di programma tra Magistrato alle Acque di Venezia, Regione del Veneto e Comune di Venezia.
La fragilità del tessuto dove si colloca l'edificio, il suo limite incerto dove le escursioni della marea modificano il disegno e lo spessore dei bordi, la bellissima batteria austriaca, memoria del più ampio sistema puntuale di fortificazione dello spazio liquido lagunare, la scansione regolare del terreno coltivato a carciofi e dei ghebi (corsi d'acqua interni all'isola) disegnano il paesaggio dove si inserisce questo 'estraneo'. L'edificio che ospita il depuratore è, infatti, per esigenze normative uno spazio inaccessibile. E, tuttavia, un elemento di dimensioni notevoli.
Il tema diventa quello di disegnare il nuovo paesaggio di questa parte dell'isola. La particolare relazione che verrà istituita tra l'edificio e il terreno diventa il luogo del progetto. L'edificio si compone di due parti: una zona interrata che contiene l'impianto di depurazione e lo spazio fuori terra che ospita l'area di essicazione dei fanghi, una cabina elettrica e un'area per la manutenzione. Il tema del progetto diventa l'invenzione di uno 'spazio di confine' che è la soluzione di continuità tra edificio e suolo.
Murature parallele in cemento armato colorato con pigmenti e disattivato, dello spessore di un metro, fondano, come ruderi di un'antica 'batteria', lo spazio e costruiscono un edificio-struttura, diventandone l'immagine fisica e proponendo rimandi all'antica struttura militare, oggi territorio del parco, agli elementi puntuali di difesa di cui la stessa isola è ricca nell'esempio più importante della Torre Massimiliana. L'edificio si costruisce di solide murature e viene, di contro, tamponato con pannelli in doghe di iroko, apribili nelle zone necessarie allo scarico delle polveri.
L'edificio si fonda solidamente nel terreno e contemporaneamente pensa al terreno, al vuoto come uno dei suoi possibili fronti. La parte interrata infatti, con la sua forometria in copertura concorre a disegnare il nuovo suolo e si rivela in un gioco di percorsi che si intersecano con il disegno del verde. Lavanda e phlox, ginestra e santolina, rosmarino accolgono, con la stessa giacitura dell'edificio, le sue traccie. Disegnano la parte accessibile del parco in modo tale che l'edificio (inaccessibile) sia invece pensato e tracciato in un senso più ampio, pensato per un 'land-watching' che dovrà diventare uno dei capisaldi del sistema del parco.
