In addition to its innovative double wall, what strikes you immediately about the building is its recessed, angular entrance. An echo of buildings that stood at this intersection in earlier times, this design frees up the sidewalk for the dense pedestrian traffic this area generates, particularly during festivals. The unique façade is marked by seemingly random openings in the building’s wooden envelope. The envelope is protected by a shell of transparent glass, like a second skin; the space created by superimposing these materials will be used for a variety of multimedia installations. The distribution of windows reflects the activities going on inside: the exhibition rooms in the upper levels enjoy controlled lighting, while large openings flood work environments with natural light.

Ideas of fluidity and circulation influenced the architecture and create a dialogue between the building and passers-by. In summer, a portion of the envelope retracts at the level of St. Catherine St., altering the building’s physical limits. The impression of exchange is echoed in the interior, with elements such as an opening that originates in the lobby and passes through the first three floors, the windowed mezzanine overlooking the ground floor, and a sculptural staircase, between the third and fourth floors, which occupants can choose over the elevator. These elements, central to daily activities, encourage interaction between individuals and their environment.

The building was designed as part of “Imagining-Building Montréal 2025”. The Angus Development Corporation ensured its cultural vocation by allocating 75% of the space to cultural organizations. CIBL community radio, La Vitrine, Artexte, Vox and the Regroupement des centres d’artistes autogérés du Québec also helped to design their space so it would reflect their needs. The French restaurant Le St. Cyr occupies the ground floor, while a future bar with outdoor terrace on the fifth floor will offer striking viewpoints of the surrounding area.

Le bâtiment à double paroi se distingue par son entrée angulaire et légèrement en retrait faisant écho aux bâtiments historiques situés à ce croisement et permettant un dégagement du trottoir pour la circulation dense du quartier, en particulier lors des festivals. La singularité de sa façade est représentée par les ouvertures au rythme aléatoire de son enveloppe de bois. Cette dernière, telle une seconde peau, est protégée par une coquille de verre transparent, et l’espace crée par la superposition de ces matériaux servira à diverses installations multimedia. La répartition des fenêtres fait analogie aux activités ayant lieu dans les espaces intérieurs; ainsi, les salles d’exposition des niveaux supérieurs bénéficient d’un éclairage contrôlé, tandis que de grandes ouvertures laissent pénétrer un maximum de lumière naturelle dans les environnements de travail.

Les notions de fluidité et de circulation ont influencé les gestes architecturaux et créent un dialogue entre le bâtiment et les passants. Durant la période estivale, une portion de l’enveloppe se rétracte au niveau de la rue Sainte-Catherine, transgressant ainsi les limites physiques du bâtiment. Cette impression d’échange est perpétuée à travers le parcours intérieur, se manifestant à travers des éléments tels la percée prenant racine dans le vestibule et traversant les trois premiers étages, la mezzanine vitrée surplombant le rez-de-chaussée et l’escalier sculptural entre les 3iemes et 4iemes étages, que les occupants favorisent à l’ascenseur. Ces éléments, au centre des activités quotidiennes, suscitent l’interaction entre les individus et leur environnement.

Réalisé dans le cadre du projet «Imaginer-Réaliser Montréal 2025 », la Société de développement Angus a assuré la vocation culturelle de l’immeuble en allouant 75% de ses espaces à des organismes culturels; la radio communautaire CIBL, La Vitrine, Artexte, Vox et le Regroupement des centres d’artistes autogérés du Québec ont ainsi participé à l’aménagement de leur espace selon leurs besoins spécifiques. Le restaurant français Le St.Cyr occupe le rez-de-chaussée tandis que le futur bar au cinquième étage avec terrasse extérieure offrira des points de vue saillants sur le quartier.
