ENG - In the summer of 1990 the removal of the border fortifications began, leaving the land where the Church of Reconciliation had once stood overgrown with grass and shrubs. While the general trend was to get rid of the physical evidence of Berlin’s division, the Reconciliation Parish considered the most suitable use for the site, in a way that commemorated its past whilst looking towards the future. The result was to build a chapel on the site; a modern construction that considered ecological and historical concerns as well as the needs of its parishioners.
The Berlin architects Rudolf Reitermann and Peter Sassenroth were commissioned to design the chapel. Wooden columns were used for the outer oval wall, which recreates the shape of the chapel’s predecessor and the inner oval of the chapel is made from pressed clay and follows the usual east-west orientation of churches. The chapel was constructed in 1999 under the leadership of the Austrian clay artist Martin Rauch. Volunteers from Open Houses (a German charity founded in 1989 that specialises in preserving endangered historical monuments in east Germany, with the help of foreign volunteers) came form fourteen eastern and western European countries to support the building project. To construct the walls, 30 cm of moist clay was put into position and then compressed by 8 cm, giving the wall’s structure its strength. Within the clay, pieces of stone and even glass are visible and these came from the rubble of the previous church. It is the first clay-built public building to be built for over 150 years in Germany and the first clay-built German church. On the 9th November 2000, on the eleventh anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Chapel of Reconciliation was consecrated.

The chapel unites architectural and ecological modernity with remembrance, standing as a triumph against its predecessors destruction. Its memorial and reconciliation roles are recognised by the chapel being part of Gedenkstaette Berliner Mauer (Berlin Wall Memorial) and with it being included in Coventry Cathedral’s Community of the Cross of Nails: a world symbol for reconciliation and peace. The chapel also has a replica of Coventry Cathedral’s Statue of Reconciliation, a gift of the Cathedral found in Hiroshima and Belfast too – also places emerging from the destructiveness of war.
After helping with the construction, Open Houses has continued its involvement with the chapel. Every year volunteers from around the world work at the chapel and help the parish with their work.

The original church was completed in 1894 as an imposing brick-built building, in the neo-Gothic style. It received some damage in the Second World War, and still has a deactivated American bomb in the basement discovered during the reconstruction in 1999, but the church survived the war. With the division of Berlin in 1945, the church building found itself within the Soviet occupation zone, with most of the parishioners in the neighbouring French zone. This meant that when the Berlin Wall was constructed in 1961, it ran directly in front of the church on its western side and behind it on the eastern side, preventing access to everyone except the border guards, who used its tower as an observation post. The church building was destroyed in 1985 in order ‘to increase the security, order and cleanliness on the state border with West Berlin’ according to the official justification by the GDR (German Democratic Republic) government. Less than five years later, the Wall fell.

GER - Die Kapelle der Versöhnung ist eine Kirche in der Bernauer Straße im Berliner Bezirk Mitte, die 2000 auf dem Fundament der Versöhnungskirche in Lehmbauweise gebaut wurde. Sie ist Teil der Gedenkstätte Berliner Mauer. Durch den Bau der Berliner Mauer wurde auch die Versöhnungsgemeinde geteilt.
Ab 1961 war die 1894 gebaute Versöhnungskirche für die im Westteil der Stadt gelegene Gemeinde nicht mehr zugänglich, weil sie auf dem „Todesstreifen“ zwischen innerer und äußerer Mauer stand. 1985 wurde sie dann schließlich von der DDR gesprengt. Nach der Wende erhielt die Gemeinde 1995 das Grundstück mit der Auflage einer sakralen Nutzung zurück.
Die Architekten Peter Sassenroth und Rudolf Reitermann entwarfen einen ungewöhnlichen Kirchenbau. Auf den Fundamenten des Chorraums wurde ein ovaler Kirchenraum von Lehmbaukünstler Martin Rauch in Stampflehmbauweise errichtet, der von außen mit Holzstäben ummantelt ist. Es ist seit mehr als 100 Jahren der erste öffentlich gebaute Lehmbau in Deutschland. So weit wie möglich wurden Materialien der Versöhnungskirche in dem Bau verarbeitet. Das Retabel wurde in den schlichten Innenraum integriert, und Teile des Bauschutts wurden zermahlen als Zusatz in die Lehmmasse gegeben. Die geretteten Glocken sind in einem Glockengerüst außerhalb der Kapelle aufgehängt. Der Grundriss der Versöhnungskirche ist um die Kapelle markiert.
Am 9. November 2000 wurde die Kapelle der Versöhnung eingeweiht und ist Teil der Gedenkstätte Berliner Mauer in der Bernauer Straße. Im Gemeindehaus, das 1965 als Ersatz für die unzugängliche Kirche gebaut wurde, ist das dazugehörige Dokumentationszentrum untergebracht.
eit dem 13. August 2005 findet in der Kapelle der Versöhnung täglich von Dienstag bis Freitag um 12 Uhr mittags eine 15-minütige Andacht statt, in der die Biografie eines an der Berliner Mauer Gestorbenen verlesen wird. Die Biographien sind das Ergebnis eines Kooperationsprojekts des Vereins Berliner Mauer und des Zentrums für Zeithistorische Forschung in Potsdam, in dem Historiker die Biografien von Maueropfern recherchieren.

ITA - La cappella, di forma ovale, si erge al centro dell’ex "fascia della morte" definita dal muro di Berlino, nel punto in cui sorgeva la chiesa evangelica della riconciliazione eretta nel 1894 e demolita nel 1985. La sala interna è costituita di argilla cruda ed è principalmente illuminata dall’alto attraverso un’apertura nel tetto. La parete si presenta come un unico ovale realizzato con listelli di legno, posti a piccole distanze l’uno dall’altro e illuminano in maniera fioca il corridoio che circonda la sala centrale. Nella parte posteriore di questo vano intermedio sono collocate, nel pavimento, piccole aperture attraverso le quali è possibile osservare le fondazioni dell’edificio preesistente.
Dopo la restituzione del terreno la comunità decise di costruire con i mezzi più semplici sulle fondamenta della vecchia chiesa una nuova cappella, un edificio moderno che rendesse giustizia alle esigenze del presente e del futuro nella stessa misura e che nello stesso tempo proteggesse le tracce ancora conservate, senza ricostruire quanto è andato perduto.
Si voleva che l’edificio fosse conforme al suo tempo anche in senso ecologico: quindi che si risparmiassero le risorse pensando anche alle generazioni venture. La comunità ha allora optato per un progetto composto da due corpi edilizi ovali, collocati uno dentro l’altro ma con gli assi ruotati in direzioni opposte l’una all’altra. L’ovale esterno (in lamelle di legno) riprende l’orientamento della vecchia Chiesa della Conciliazione, quello interno (di argilla compressa) riprende invece l’orientamento ovest – est, abituale nelle chiese.
Il corpo in argilla compressa è stato costruito nel 1999 sotto direzione del costruttore austriaco Martin Rauch, specializzato nel lavoro con l'argilla. Volontari dell’associazione Case Aperte, provenienti da 14 paesi dell’Europa occidentale e orientale, lo hanno aiutato. L’argilla ancora umida dall’estrazione è stata posata in una cassaforma formando strati di 30 centimetri che poi sono stati ispessiti uno alla volta e portati a uno spessore di circa 8 centimetri. Il 9. Novembre del 2000, l’undicesimo anniversario della caduta del Muro, la Cappella della Riconciliazione è stata inaugurata. Si tratta della prima costruzione pubblica ufficiale in argilla compressa da più di 150 anni in Germania e contemporaneamente della prima chiesa tedesca in argilla compressa portante.
Non si sarebbe potuto progettare il nuovo luogo sorto con la Cappella in modo convenzionale. Questo nuovo luogo non è stato il risultato di una concezione già completa, mirata a raggiungere fin dall’inizio un effetto predeterminato. Si è trattato invece del risultato di una crescita che unifica ora approcci forti, che indicano strade verso il futuro dell’architettura, dell’ ecologia, della cultura del ricordo e della comprensione reciproca in Europa. È proprio questo che costituisce la forza di attrazione della Capella.
L’associazione Case Aperte è particolarmente interessata a fare della Cappella della Conciliazione un luogo di incontro tra i giovani di diverse nazioni. Ogni anno Case Aperte organizza progetti internazionali: un laboratorio di progettazione del contesto urbanistico della Cappella, progetti artistici di ricordo della costruzione del Muro e un laboratorio nel corso del quale è stato dissotterrata archeologicamente la piazza antistante alla vecchia Chiesa della Conciliazione. Inoltre volontari internazionali di Case Aperte appoggiano costantemente la comunità nel servizio visitatori della Cappella.
