The project set into the earth, almost invisible from the Gallic-Roman amphitheatre. It is designed as an extension of the landscape, an insertion within the chain of valleys and depressions that the Picardie topography forms along the horizon. The museum is a sign, excavated into the earth, a building that is not defined by its presence or its materiality but, on the contrary, by its absence. It is through a play of excavations and openings that the museum attempts, like the archaeological site that surrounds it, to reveal the invisible. The museum allows itself to be discovered by visitors through movements, walking along a cor-ten steel ramp from the level of the road towards the entrance to the museum, in the lower area. This ramp, positioned along the axis of the future path that will lead to the amphitheatre, almost slides the visitor into the depth of the earth, displaying its various layers, passing from the natural, the existing landscape, into the artificial, that of the museum, arriving at the layers of archaeology, which sink even deeper. The museum is also simultaneously the rising of the ground plane, allowing for the opening of a cut in the landscape to create the entrance and bring natural light into its interior. Along the access ramp, the only façade of the museum is a blade of cor-ten steel that contains the ramp, a retaining wall and the display space of the museum. Oxidation naturally gives cor-ten steel its own protective layer against humidity and corrosion. Its copper hues render it almost organic as its patina and coloring change over time.


Il progetto si inscrive nello spessore del suolo, diventando quasi invisibile dal teatro gallo-romano, ed è pensato come l’estensione del paesaggio, un’inserzione nella catena delle valli e depressioni che la topografia della Picardie disegna in questo orizzonte. Il museo è un segno scavato nel suolo, un edificio non definito dalla sua presenza o dalla sua materialità ma al contrario dalla sua assenza ed è attraverso un gioco di scavi e aperture che il museo tenta, come il sito archeologico che lo circonda, di svelare l’invisibile. Il museo si lascia scoprire dai visitatori attraverso il movimento, percorrendo una rampa in acciaio cor-ten dal livello di accesso della strada verso la porta d’ingresso del museo nella parte inferiore. Questa rampa, posizionata lungo l’asse del futuro cammino che condurrà al teatro, fa quasi scivolare lentamente i visitatori nello spessore del terreno, rendendo manifesti i diversi strati del suolo, passando dal suolo naturale, il paesaggio attuale, al suolo artificiale, quello del museo, fino agli strati archeologici che affondano più in basso. Nello stesso tempo il museo è anche un sollevarsi dal suolo che permette di aprire una tasca nel paesaggio per permettere l’ingresso e la diffusione della luce al suo interno. Lungo la rampa d’accesso, la sola facciata del museo è una lama in acciaio cor-ten che integra nel suo spessore la rampa, un muro di contenimento e la galleria espositiva del museo. L’acciaio cor-ten è un acciaio la cui caratteristica è quella di generare uno strato di ossidazione che protegge l’acciaio dall’umidità dell’aria e dalla sua corrosione. Di colore ramato, questo materiale quasi organico cambia colorazione e patina nel corso del tempo.
