Matali Crasset created an ecological house in the Tunisian desert.
After the experience of the HI hotel in Nice, now Dar HI in Nefta which is the fruit of the collaboration between matali crasset, Patrick Elouarghi and Philippe Chapelet with a new concept of eco-retreat.
Matali literally rose a citadel, from the sand, dedicated to well being. Protected by surroundings walls you find a composition of elevated houses that constitute the Dar HI as a small village. The overall architectural goal was to give a strong proposition while in harmony with the natural site and the local life.
Dar HI’s main colours are ochre and sand with a comprehensive choice of body and spirit care within areas that are private or communal, a pool, a restaurant and a Spa.
The dialogue and collaboration between Philippe Chapelet, Patrick Elouarghi and matali crasset started in 2005. They all decided to push the contemporary experience a bit further with Dar HI a new concept of hospitality and serenity. They all have a common interest always to question their ideas and the desire to conceive innovative projects; those are the main reasons why their collaboration is so dynamic.
matali crasset develops a design that is meant to be practical and believes in initiatives that have a sense locally but also collectively.
Patrick and Philippe are creative entrepreneurs that are always ahead of their time. They are driven by the renewal of propositions, the reinvention of codes and sites and the research on contemporary hotel industry and well being. These strong set views unite them for an intransient length of time. After Nice and the HI hotel, Paris and the HIMATIC, it is now Tunisia with Dar HI.
The DARHI team has created privileged relationships with the inhabitants of the village who will be taking care of the house. The gardeners will till the garden that will be the main source of vegetables and fruits. To access the Dar HI you walk towards it and this is the beginning of your stay. The car has been left further from the house. A discreet door leads you to imagine that you walk in a private house. The entrance, a corridor, a ramp is the last stop where you leave your “codes” at the exterior. With the surrounding wall, typical of local architecture, Dar HI follows the movement of the terrain, following the shapes of the site and emerges from the sand as a mirage citadel.
Inside, the elevated houses seem to be planted into the sand and they structure the project. They are located according to their sun exposure and panorama. matali crasset designed 3 different areas: the pill houses, the troglodytes and the dunes.
The pill houses
These houses have exceptional views that are all different. Some have a panorama overlooking the horizon of the salted lake, others have a view of the palm grove and its very diverse landscape. Both are very different, one is more intimate being high above the ground with a panoramic view and the other on the lower ground so more amongst the communal area. High above the ground the room is structured around a bow window, as if the view was integrated in the room. A small table to nibble or work, a large bed that hides part of the shower and toilets compose the room. Down below it is like a small village square. Everyone has a space that is protected from the sun. The square, the bar, the water point and small fountains are all places to be easily together.
The troglodytes: for a mineral experience
Three areas called troglodytes with small bricks from Nefta are completely independent with their own private terraces but also linked together by a circular area from one to the other. Collective life is articulated around a small square with a small water cascade and a bread oven. These rooms can be rented entirely for a stay with friends or family. The freshness reminds of the typical troglodytes houses of Matmata.
The dunes: to have the feeling of having an indoor landscape
The three areas called dunes are at sand level. They are like open spaces that the wind would have sculpted. The inspiration was the bivouac that allows you to modulate your comfort as you wish. The experience of living within the dunes creating your own nest to feel closer to the desert. They are all different, one has a loggia with a natural light and an indoor garden, the other very spacious has an external terrace and a large window with a view of Nefta, the third one also very spacious and fresh. It offers a view on the date grove with an independent room and an alcove wooden terrace.
Dar HI has different communal areas that are places to meet and share.
“Leaving the communal areas as open as possible, I wished to leave an easy circulation with a large potential to use the area as much as possible” says matali.
The kitchen: open on the exterior
It is a laboratory where you can see the cooks at work, all from Nefta village. The area is also open for the guests every hour of the day or night. There is no area dedicated for the restaurant but a large table and small tables that can be arranged.
The auditorium: an area that changes according to the activities
Cinema, music, rest … It has foam material seating that have the superior part that can be used as a back rest. As there are no televisions in the rooms this area allows people to gather and listen to music or watch a movie.
The library: around the staircase
Like a hedgehog, the staircase has wooden sticks where books are placed and easily accessible. You can come choose a book, read it, put it back or sit comfortably to read it.
The modular living area
With poufs, it is a very agreeable area that you can build yourself. With alcoves, suspensions in terracotta and its chimney, it is a nice area for intimate and warm evenings.
The architecture of the houses is typical with walls made of whole bricks that have a distinctive ochre colour. Roofs and house doors are made of palm wood. Patrick, Philippe and Matali wanted at first to conceive a house within the village to be in the heart of the town with its energy and spirit. They never considered to be isolated from local life on he contrary they wished their project to in the action and development of the town. That is when the project drifted towards a sustainable development project. From the first drawings of Dar HI, matali researched a way to combine contemporary materials to local artefacts. The designer worked with local craftsman taking into account their techniques and constraints. She observed their construction technique using beams and bricks that she used in the pill houses. For the walls she chose small clay bricks that are made in Nefta. The palm tree is also transformed and reinterpreted in elements of the architecture and design within Dar HI. The gutter and recesses are reminders of the local architecture reference. The straw mattresses and the lanterns were highlighted by matali with some objects from everyday life like the carpet that floats in the wind, now the symbol of Dar HI.
Ecology and sustainable development are the foundations of Dar HI’s project. The date grove is a local gem, in a fragile environment that has to be preserved and renovated. The renovation has started with a great development financed by the Albert de Monaco Foundation. Dar HI is committed in the same preservation and development of the oasis.
A research laboratory will be in Dar HI to find news ways and techniques to use the palm tree and the dates. Within the oasis there is a shadowed shelter, a log cabin with minimal comfort, a vegetable garden in which a will be selected carefully what type of species will be grown. The oasis and the vegetable garden will be used by Dar HI.
Being in the desert, the question of water supply is therefore decisive. The water arriving in Nefta comes from a warm source and supplies Dar HI for the hammam and the pool. This water is also present in small ditches around the pill houses and allows the irrigation of the oasis.

Six ans après l’ouverture de l’hôtel Hi, hotel design à Nice, Philippe Chapelet et Patrick Elouarghi vous invitent à vivre une nouvelle expérience, à Nefta, au sud de la Tunisie. Et c’est à nouveau à la designer matali crasset qu’ils ont confié le soin de concevoir et de réaliser le projet (design de l'espace intérieur / extérieur, architecture, décoration, mobilier design...). De cette aventure collective est né « Dar Hi », un hébergement contemporain entre la maison d’hôtes et l’hôtel de charme, aux confins du désert et de la ville.
Le voyage à Dar Hi est un voyage d’initiation, de découvertes et intérieur. Il permet de s’isoler, de se ressourcer, de prendre soin de son corps mais aussi d’échanger et de s’ouvrir aux autres dans un environnement écologique naturel et humain exceptionnel.
Dar Hi se présente comme un ensemble, une sorte de village qui s'inscrit naturellement dans le paysage de Nefta et l'environnement de la ville. Entouré d'un mur comme toutes les architectures locales, Dar Hi suit le mouvement du terrain et épouse les formes du site pour émerger du sol. C’est en arrivant à pieds, en laissant sa voiture à l’écart et en chaussant des babouches à l’entrée, que le séjour commence.
Dar Hi est au service de votre bien-être : massages, hammam et bains aux huiles essentielles dans le SPA hi body and soul, nourriture bio et produits bio à la table Dar Hi dans un cadre contemporain, écologique et équitable conçu par Matali Crasset. Dar HI est situé dans le centre historique de la ville de Nefta dans le sud de la Tunisie, aux portes du désert, coincée entre Chott El-Jerid et les dunes de sables.
Célèbre pour son site géologique naturel, la corbeille de nefta. Nefta est également réputée pour ses milliers de palmiers donnant l’une des variétés de dattes les plus recherchées dans le monde : les « deglet nour ». L'architecture des maisons est typique. Les murs sont faits de briques pleines de couleur ocre. Les toits ainsi que les portes des maisons sont fabriqués à partir du bois de palmier. Ce n'est pas par hasard si cet endroit a inspiré un nombre important de cinéastes, notamment pour deux films cultes. Il s'agit du long métrage "Le patient anglais" tourné en partie à Nefta et la "Guerre des étoiles" dont des séquences ont été tournées dans le désert.
La population n’a pas connu de grande évolution depuis le début du siècle ; elle reste autour de 22 000 habitants.
Dar Hi bénéficie du meilleur point de vue de la ville. Sur un terrain exposé plein sud et ouest, il domine la corbeille de Nefta. Le panorama est exceptionnel : au plus près, la ville historique et animée, plus loin, l’oasis et ses palmiers à perte de vue, et au-delà les irisations de sel du Chott El -Djerid qui offrent de magnifiques et mystérieux couchers de soleil. Tout est conçu pour laisser le charme de Nefta agir. Dar Hi est à la fois comme un havre protecteur qui permet un certain retrait du monde mais aussi comme un poste d'observation sur la vie locale, le paysage, les rythmes de la nature. Dar HI est une maison d’hôtes tournée vers le bien-être et le ressourcement intérieur. Une véritable thalasso de l’esprit.
Dar HI propose une parenthèse dans la vie afin de méditer, se relaxer, se ressourcer le corps et l’esprit.
Tout comme l’hôtel HI, Dar Hi s’inscrit dans une démarche écologique. Sa construction a été menée dans le respect de l’environnement, en coopération avec les artisans de la ville de Nefta et en utilisant exclusivement les matériaux locaux pour le mobilier, la décoration, l’isolation ... Dar Hi se développe donc en harmonie avec la vie locale et l’environnement naturel. Il contribue notamment à la préservation de l’oasis de Nefta.
L’écologie et le commerce équitable sont les fondements de Dar HI :
■L’eau en provenance d’une source d’eau chaude dans le désert assure par géothermie le chauffage du hammam et de la piscine.
■Cette eau chaude permet également l’irrigation de l’oasis.
■Afin de respecter l'environnement, la peinture a été remplacé par un enduit naturelle à la chaux de thela avec des colorants naturels
■La nourriture provient en partie du potager bio sans engrais installé dans l’oasis.
■Le projet de Dar HI ne comporte aucune importation de produits étrangers et utilise exclusivement des produits locaux notamment le bois de palmier.
Dar HI propose 4 concepts différents pour 17 chambres.
Les différents espaces chambres qui forment la Dar Hi sont disposés selon des orientations distinctes de sorte à offrir chacun un point de vue particulier sur l'extérieur (ville, désert, oasis...) et un type d'interaction avec la vie de l'hôtel (terrasse intérieure, piscine, hammam...).
Quatre types d'espaces à vivre sont ainsi proposés :
■le type air avec les maisons en pilotis donnant sur la vie locale et la palmeraie
■le type troglodyte dans la partie rocheuse
■le type dune au niveau du sable
■la maison traditionnelle
Les espaces en pilotis offrent des panoramas exceptionnels et pour chacun différent. Les uns s’élèvent pour profiter de l’horizon irisé du lac salé, les autres donnent sur la corbeille et son paysage varié. Tous offrent deux expériences de vie possibles, l’une plus intime en partie haute avec une vue panoramique sur l’extérieur, l’autre davantage publique et collective sur la terrasse ombragée située en partie basse. En partie haute, la vie s’organise autour du bow-window (maksoura), comme si la vue elle-même était intégrée. Une petite table pour grignoter ou travailler, un vaste lit qui vient masquer la partie douche et les toilettes composent l’espace. En bas, c’est comme une petite place de village qui se forme à l’extérieur. Chacun a son espace protégé du soleil et pour lequel on organise son envie d’intimité par un jeu de treilles. Mais on peut aussi facilement se sentir tous ensemble.
Pour une expérience minérale Les trois espaces troglodytes éclairés par une lumière zénithale sont à la fois indépendants avec chacun une terrasse privative et reliés entre eux par un espace commun circulaire. La vie collective s’organise, autour d’une petite place encadrée d’une cascade d’eau et d’un four à pain (tabouna). Ces chambres peuvent être louées ensemble, pour un séjour en famille ou entre amis. Leur fraîcheur rappelle la douceur des maisons troglodytes typiques de la région de Matmata. L’impression d’espace permet de faire l’expérience d’un confort épuré. Pour une sensation de paysage intérieur Les trois espaces dunes sont au niveau du sable. Ils se présentent comme des pièces ouvertes qu’un vent de sable aurait dessinées. Comme si le sable était venu configurer les lieux. A la manière d’un bivouac, les espaces intérieurs proposent un confort informel et modulable. Chaque espace dune est particulier : l’un est doté d’une loggia et d’un puits de lumière avec jardin intérieur, l’autre, très vaste, dispose d’une terrasse extérieure et d’une baie vitrée avec vue sur la corbeille de Nefta, la troisième est aussi très spacieuse et très fraîche. Elle offre une vue sur la palmeraie avec une chambre indépendante et une terrasse-alcôve en bois. Maison de type traditionnel ancré dans la ville permettant de vous retrouver entre amis et en même temps d’être indépendant, tout en profitant des services de l’hôtel.
