The concept emerged from a technical problem inherent in the site. Cleaning the polluted soil on the site was seen as a necessity, but would cost one quarter of the overall project budget to complete. Through futher investigations, we discovered that since the soil was contaminated with only heavy metals, it allowed for stable ground on which to build. We then proposed to cover the entire site with a wooden deck, thereby creating a “safe” surface. Thus, a more architectural and sustainable solution to the site’s problem was achieved rather than the excavation of the entire site.
This concept also allowed for an advantageous solution to the multi-client program. Two clients share the facilities: a sailing club and a youth house. Their desires were opposite: the youth house wanted outdoor space for children to play, while the sailing club needed space to park their boats. The project is the architectural result of our negotiations between these two contradictory demands: it allows for boat storage underneath and playground above. Through a series of rolling, wave-like ramps, the interior program is spread across the site creating layers of space. An observation deck becomes an interior court. The roof of the interior spaces doubles as walkable, playable, usable space on the exterior. The presence of cool, hard surfaces on the interior of the facility is meant as a contrast to the wooden exterior, helping to further reinforce the dominant attitude of outdoor activity promoted by the youth house and sailing club.
Overall the project attempts to achieve a harmonious presence with the surrounding context. The use of the deck to preserve the soil also reduced the overall use of materials on the project, thereby lessening it’s potential carbon footprint. The form of the project invokes the motion of the adjacent waterfront and the motion of play. Distinctive yet familiar, the Maritime Youth House remains a successful and playful gesture to it’s site, clients and users.
Ubicata in un’area a est della città che fu in passato zona industriale, la struttura ospita un centro giovanile ed un club nautico. Il progetto di trasformazione fu avviato nel 2002 dall’amministrazione comunale che lanciò un concorso di idee ad inviti conclusosi con la scelta dello studio PLOT. Tra gli obiettivi del concorso, la bonifica del suolo inquinato fu esclusa dagli architetti che preferirono investire la totalità del budget disponibile nell’edificio di nuova costruzione.
“Scoprimmo – spiegano gli autori del progetto – che si trattava di inquinamento da metalli pesanti, e quindi stabile. Se non si fosse toccato il suolo, non sarebbe stato necessario rimuovere o pulire…decidemmo quindi di realizzare una pavimentazione in legno che fungesse da suolo artificiale per l’intera area di intervento”.
La difficoltà maggiore è consistita nel conciliare le differenti esigenze dettate dalla duplice destinazione della struttura: uno spazio esterno più ampio possibile per il gioco dei ragazzi del centro giovanile, ed uno spazio più ampio possibile richiesto dal club nautico per il rimessaggio delle barche. La grande onda di legno è stata la soluzione: una piattaforma in legno sopraelevata che disegna un nuovo paesaggio artificiale. L’onda di legno assicura lo spazio all’aperto destinato al gioco e, nei punti in cui “si solleva”, offre riparo alle barche al livello sottostante.
In un movimento morbido e sinuoso, la piattaforma di legno si solleva verso l’entroterra per poi scendere verso il mare disegnando un’ampia terrazza con vista sul porto.
La struttura portante è realizzata in calcestruzzo armato e rivestita con pannelli di alluminio. Tutte le parti esterne sono incorniciate da una ringhiera in acciaio inossidabile composta da corrimano tubolare e pannellatura di rete a maglia romboidale.
Ampie porte-finestre mettono in relazione con l’esterno tutti gli ambienti dell’edificio che comunicano pertanto con il rimessaggio delle barche e con la corte interna.
Semplice l’architettura interna: cemento nella colorazione standard del grigio per la zona laboratorio, ed intonacato di bianco negli spazi di condivisione.
