L’ubicazione del sito, all’estremità meridionale del downtown district, rende la Figueroa Tower un segno ben visibile nello skyline della città di Los Angeles.
La torre parte dal suolo, si fonde con il basamento, si innalza e si rastrema dolcemente lungo le facciate nord e sud, mentre le facciate est e ovest restano completamente verticali. Una sola parte della torre è leggermente inclinata. Questa è la caratteristica essenziale della composizione. Questa variazione, in aggiunta alla forma conica, crea viste della torre di volta in volta diverse nello skyline.
Il progetto mira a migliorare il carattere e la funzione della zona pedonale su questo sito. Lungo Figueroa Street la base è in posizione arretrata rispetto alla linea di proprietà per consentire la creazione di maggiori spazi pubblici all'aperto, sotto forma di una piazza-giardino. Quest’ultima fungerà da ingresso principale alla zona commerciale del progetto e come ingresso diretto dal piano terra a ristoranti e spa.
Questo spazio pubblico comprende zone panoramiche e strutture per pedoni come posti a sedere, illuminazione e giochi d'acqua.
I nuovi programmi commerciali previsti nella zona basamentale della torre contribuiranno ad animare la vita lungo Figueroa Street.
The 1340 Figueroa Street residential development is a multifaceted composition developed within the current fabric of downtown Los Angeles. The development strikes a balance between the tall buildings of downtown and the large scale civic complexes like the neighboring Convention Center and the Staples Center. The location of the site, at the southern end of the high rise downtown district, allows the tower to create a visible marker, contributing to a new skyline for the City of Los Angeles.
The architecture intends to create a unified, compositional whole. The tower starts at the ground, interlocks with the base, rises up and gently tapers along the north and south facades. This is the essential gesture in this composition. The east and west facades are completely vertical. The tower portion of the massing is slightly angled in plan off the grid of the base and the surrounding city grid. This shift, in addition to the tapered form, creates constantly changing views of the tower in the skyline.
The design seeks to improve the character and function of the pedestrian realm on this site. Along Figueroa Street the base steps back from the property line at ground level to open up more public outdoor space in the form of a landscaped plaza. The plaza will act as a main entrance to the commercial portion of the project and as direct entrances into the ground level restaurants and spa. This public space includes landscape areas and pedestrian amenities including seating, lighting and water features. The new commercial programs in the base help to animate the street life along Figueroa St.
