My wife and I share many things. We are avid “bamboodies”. We are currently in the midst of our own Guadua bamboo farm in our home town Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. Working with the USDA in Puerto Rico, so far we have around 75 mother plants in our 15 acres of land. We both have a background in Architecture and Urban Planning with a focus in sustainability. Also, we have obtained a patent for a concrete block that reduces energy consumption and helps controls water runoff. I have been passionate about bamboo ever since my father got inspired by Buckminster Fuller and started building geodesic domes out of vulgaris bamboo in our backyard. I think that we are at the beginning of a large bamboo craze that is long overdue. As you know Bamboo as a material has tremendous possibilities for construction applications; from pre-fabricated modular construction to glue laminated bamboo construction. In my master’s thesis I proposed a school of construction and restoration that would teach specialized building trades to local craftsmen, promoting sound building practices with high levels of quality. My wife’s thesis complemented mine in that she proposed pre-fabricated modular housing designs in for hilly terrains, common in Puerto Rico. Thank you for your time Claudio B.
